In the 80s I was intrigued by the depth of the hatred between Shi'a and Sunni I saw in the Iran/Iraq war. Since then I have taken the opportunity when it presents itself to ask Muslims what are the differences, what event precipitated the schism, why all the hatred, is it something like Catholic/Protestant, etc.

Quickly the subject of Shi'a temporary marriage came up.
