I used to visit a friend near Tompkins Sq park just as was being 'cleaned up' and made safe for America. That was in the early 1990s. By now it must be yuppie city. And by the time I got to hitting bars in Alphabet city (milk bar anyone)? It was generally "safe". You could still get mugged and beat up, though. That same friend got punched in the face and had his wallet stolen as he walked to 1st avenue to buy a falafel sandwich. I guess those who grew up there have seen the entire gamut of changes.
