Thank you. Sometimes, even a lifelong New Yorker can forget what once was:
Quote:
Five years ago, Ms. Freedman returned to the city, homesick for what she described as "the smart talking and corned beef." She barely recognized the place. "When I saw that they had turned 42nd Street into Disneyland," she said, "I just stood there and wept." Presumably much more is out there to be captured by her Leica. "I'd like to find what's left," Ms. Freedman said.
Reminds me of Gary Winogrand - big NYC photographer who died in the mid 1980s. Left a ton of unexposed material in his apt. I don't know who inherited his estate and if they published the ton of rolls found. He'd walk around the city shooting left and right.

It was certainly a much different New York. In those days when you said Alphabet City you immediately thought of junkies and muggings and murders. No longer.

I used to visit a friend near Tompkins Sq park just as was being 'cleaned up' and made safe for America. That was in the early 1990s. By now it must be yuppie city. And by the time I got to hitting bars in Alphabet city (milk bar anyone)? It was generally "safe". You could still get mugged and beat up, though. That same friend got punched in the face and had his wallet stolen as he walked to 1st avenue to buy a falafel sandwich. I guess those who grew up there have seen the entire gamut of changes.
