HB refers to the hardness of the lead. What diameter lead did you get and what brand? 5mm or 7mm? I like the HB in 7mm. I break that soft stuff in a 5mm. Pentel makes a good mechanical pencil for the money.
If you want to try something new get some non-repro blue lead for your mechanical pencils.
