The cool thing is when I meet dudes in their late 30's that used to skate board and they complain about all their physical ailments due to falling on their knees and tail bone 70 times a week for 10 years.
This is very true if you're one of these 'extreme' street skaters that are always throwing themselves down 16 stair sets or trying to nail huge gaps or drops. But not all skateboardng is like that. As a skater myself, I'm more inspired by the technical skills of Rodney Mullen than someone trying to seriously injure themselves in a desperate quest for attention (or sponsorship).
Recent Footage (I would guess about age 37-38)
His autobiography is subtitled: "How To Skateboard And Not Kill Yourself". He's 41 and can still do all the tricks he's always done, because he hasn't subjected himself to the sort of ridiculous wear-and-tear most street skaters do.
Skateboarding teaches self-discipline if you approach it correctly. It also teaches you to identify what you are doing wrong and fix it. You are only as good as you make yourself, because there is no opponent to have a bad day (like, tennis, for example) and you have no teammates to carry you if you are not up to par (Soccer, basketball). It is what you make of it, essentially.
