I have a mediocre digital camera I use for work and taking pics of old records and I have a good 35mm SLR camera I seem to use less and less. (Pentax PZ20).

I like the photo quality of the 35mm much better than my digital camera and the prints are always better than what I can print from my digital.

Anyone else have and use both and why do you use a particular camera and for which purpose? I'm using the 35mm for "archival" photos or ones I think I want to keep a long time, but rarely use it otherwise.

I've used all kinds of cameras. You might want to try a large format camera or a medium format Pentax 645.

Film is dead for the most part. Get a better digital cam and you'll likely be pleased. Check Consumer Reports for some good choices.

I have a friend whose very old school and refuses to accept digital as a legitimate medium. For me personally, what I use will usually be determined by what I'm shooting. What I like about digital is you can shoot about 20 pictures and see them on the spot, edit and or delete them depending on whether or not you like them. Also you don't have as many hassles with lighting.
What I mainly dislike about it is how mechanic it is and how it can feel empty.

I have a digital camera and love it. It's a low end ($75), but i can look at my pics immediately. Fuck development.

I have 2 digital cameras now, no film. Canon EOS 10D(6-megapixels) and Canon A640(10-megapixels). EOS 10D is more of a surgical tool.

Mrs. O'Dizzle swears by her Nikon D40 DSLR. All digital, relatively cheap (around $500), but the pic quality and the speed you can take consecutive pics at really make it worthwhile. Digital totally pwns film, in both cost and quality.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll start looking for a Digital SLR- maybe Pentax makes a decent one that will use my old lenses.

Edit: Something like this would use my lenses, at 10mp, for 800 bucks.

Hell here's 6 mp w/ a lense and compatible at 255.00 at the moment.

I'm no pro, but I have a pretty good 35 mm SLR that was around $800 when I bought it. I accumulated a few lenses over the years too. I'm somewhat embarassed to say that I haven't taken it out of the bag in 2 years.

I have a 7 MP camera that's smaller, faster and exponentially easier to use. Hell, one of my cell phones has a 3.2 MP camera which is good enough for most of my uses.

Around spring of last year I knew almost nothing about photography other than "point and shoot". At the time I had a fixed-lens Olympus 3.1MP camera. It was OK, but I soon realized its limitations in using the flash and the slower focusing and picture-taking response.

I decided to learn a bit more about taking pictures and bought the
Cannon Rebel XTI for around $800 (back then).

I am very happy with my purchase and using an SLR was so much better than my older camera. The shutter responds instantly and you have the freedom to do exactly what you want once you LEARN how to take pictures. And while you are learning, the automatic settings are pretty good provided you have proper lighting.

They recently came out with a newer model, the XSI, so the XTI is even cheaper now.

These were taken with mostly automatic settings and with the "cheap" 18-55mm lens that came with the camera (left the EXIF in on a few):

Thanks Tritone. I learned how to take photographs with a Pentax K1000. All manual except for a light meter/needle. I have some background in that area. I guess I'm like the guy loopnode mentioned- If I can't smell the film when opening the canister it doesn't seem serious. Painters had the same reaction to the first photographers I am sure.

Queue cotton-picking references now.

I learned on the SAME camera, B! I still have it. As far as digital vs film, I don't think it makes much difference if you are taking artistic snapshots or vacation phots. I like the warm quality 35mm brings when I look at fashion, but digital saves you so much money otherwise since you can review your work right there and do-over when needed. Just learning the basics of lighting is more important than the camera.

I take mostly landscape and/or wildlife photos. I had a nice basic Olympus 35mm camera that crapped out on me at Mt. Rushmore about four years ago. Now I mainly use a JVC digital camcorder that has still camera capabilities. I still have a cheap Fuji 35mm that I bought at a K-Mart in Spearfish, SD as an emergency replacement for my Olympus that I use mainly for instances where I have just a couple of seconds of reaction time to get a shot of wildlife in motion. My camcorder has a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, countdown while it is focusing before I can record with it. Spooked animals can travel pretty far in five seconds. Bornyo, my deer pictures in my ADT avatars were taken with my JVC.

Those are my photos and I took them with my 6-megapixel Canon EOS 10D. I used pretty affordable lenses that costs around $300 each (28-135mm IS USM and 50mm f1.4 USM). I did a lot of retouching. One of those photos had 30+ layers and I took me like 8 hours to finish it.

Seems like a pretty bad ass phone. I've never owned either of those brands...I started out with a couple of Kyoceras, and have been an LG guy since. I got the Voyager for Christmas and I love it:

Yeah you do, not only is this a quality and comfortable bag, but it also looks good. You can fling the flash up and left and right with Speedlite.

Speedlite is just a brand name. Its a regular flash that mounts into the camera's attachment.

I have a 580-EX II.

I read that list and honestly, I'd like to have that rig. But as I told Alex, I can buy two decent offshore fishing rigs for that money. I could even install radar on my boat.

I like to use photography to record the things I enjoy rather than enjoying photography as an end unto itself.

It would be overkill for me to outfit myself with that equipment and I'd feel pretentious hauling it out to photograph my son holding up a fish in the cockpit of my boat.

This thread has convinced me to forget about the 35mm though, and to look for a decent digital SLR.

I recommend you get the cell phone I noted up a bit. The camera is adequate, it holds 4Gig of music and it's a phone too.

You can get a used one for about $150
