I wouldn't make too much of McCain's insincere overtures to the fundies and evangelicals. The GOP has a long history of treating those people the same way the Dems treated the blacks. Pay lip service to their causes, make promises to them you never intend to keep, let them have some say in a couple of nominations for inconsequential positions, but never let them have any real influence or power. In short, Christians were the GOP's niggers. Unfortunately, that idiot W. Bush went to far and actually let some of those fuckers in the door and gave them some real power. You need only look at the Justice Dept. to see it. McCain is, I believe, essentially agnostic and will say only what he needs to to lock down their votes, then kick them back to the curb where they belong.
