I remember just after his death, it may have been the morning after he was shot, my mother came running yelling for me at the school bus stop. She grabbed me tightly and hustled me home. School had been cancelled due to the widespread rioting in various cities.

At the time the only black family that went to my school owned the horse farm up the block. There weren't really any blacks in East LI as the time. I don't know who/what they were afraid of.

I was in DC shortly after the date of his death was declared a holiday. This silly shock Jock "GreaseMan" Grease Minelli (sic) almost caused a riot by going on the air and saying (on MLK Day) that all that had to be done is shoot 4 more black people and we'd have the whole week off. I'm amazed he wasn't gunned down.

Wasn't the town Howard Stern is from predominantly black? I think he's from Long Island. Roosevelt, I think.

Eastern Long Island is very white. Think of the Hamptons.

Nino Greaseminelli!

DC101 brought him in after Howard Stern "left". Used to listen to him every day on the way to Junior High.

Might also remember that he got himself fired from wherever after Lauren Hill won all those Grammys and he played a clip on his morning show and said...paraphrasing: Now I know why they drag them chained behind trucks...a referrence to the James Bird murder in Texas.

DC101 was a cool radio station though. Won tickets to a RATT concert in '85(101st caller woot!). Bon Jovi was the opening act. Only got a 5-song set,no encore. A year later they were the biggest band on the planet with non-stop radio and video play. Whatever happened to RATT?

Sorry, Loop. I sometimes forget not everyone is from the NY Area.

As noted above, Eastern Long Island. My high school class was about 800 and there were under a dozen blacks. There may have been as few as five. I knew none of them. I had only 1 black friend, and he was a year older.

The area I'm from on the north shore, called the Three Villages, still has few blacks, but there's certainly more diversity - mostly Asians [Koreans, India/Pakistan].

Though with the expansion of building further east, some likely might not see this as Eastern LI anymore.

DC101 right. I remember. I think I caught part of his second blow up. Saw him on some channel going to black churches asking for forgiveness. That time I think they fired him and he went elsewhere. Not sure about RATT. By then I was in NY, where the Opie and Anthony show went nuts sponsoring sex in a church and got taken off the air. Those guys are back elsewhere, too.

"The Greaseman" was syndicated in NYC for a time. IIRC, it was a Drive Time afternoon show that I think was on K-ROCK (the same station as Stern.) This was around the time of the Rodney King riots, but I don't remember if he said something related to get himself axed.

Stern is much closer to Queens proper than to E Hampton etc
