Sawicki presents 51st state proposal for Long IslandLooking to whack Albany with a political two-by-four, Suffolk Comptroller Joseph Sawicki and Dowling College agreed to launch a new feasibility study on the economics of Long Island seceding to become the 51st state. Sawicki and Martin Cantor, director of Dowling's Long Island Economic and Social Policy Institute, announced the six-month study at a breakfast Friday on the Oakdale campus before local business and government leaders. Both Sawicki and Cantor acknowledged such a split may be tough to sell politically to the rest of the state, but it is important to raise the issue to underline how much the region contributes to state operations and how much less it gets back -- a gap of $2.9 billion. Somehow I get a feeling that the City and Upstate will breathe a sigh of relief if this occurs. While they are at it, can they take Staten Island?

Yep. Only raised it because a few years ago there was a movement to secede from NYC but I don't know what came of it. Last big news I heard out of there was the ferry crash in 2003 or so (and that was on the Manhattan side if I remember right).
The movement went nowhere and, in any event, would have been a fucking disaster for the Island had it happened. (Taxes WAY up, services way down.)
The crash happened on the Island side, when the Assistant Captain blacked out and the Captain was off studying for some Coast Guard exam the next day.

Fatty speaks truth here. If I've ever seen any kind of "road rage," its from somebody outside the tri-state area. The natives all have a kind of tunnel vision. It's a New York thing, I suppose.
