Yep. Only raised it because a few years ago there was a movement to secede from NYC but I don't know what came of it. Last big news I heard out of there was the ferry crash in 2003 or so (and that was on the Manhattan side if I remember right).
The movement went nowhere and, in any event, would have been a fucking disaster for the Island had it happened. (Taxes WAY up, services way down.)
The crash happened on the Island side, when the Assistant Captain blacked out and the Captain was off studying for some Coast Guard exam the next day.
