Hey VOD ... did you see the Nova episode about the Intelligent Design text book trial that was brought by parents in a PA school district. I know that you said you live in PA so it might have been a hot topic though I think it was on the other side of the state from you. It was a fantastic show. The parents & I think maybe some teachers protested that the reading of a statement challenging evolution and suggesting "intelligent design". An interesting twist was that the case was heard by a judge appointed by "W" - so it seemed that there might be some leaning to the crazy right afoot. They were able to prove the court that "intelligent design" was simply a substitution for Creationism ... partially since they actually showed that the text was "jondra-ed" in a mass replace from the original version of the textbook to the current version. [A bad misspelling synched it ... I don't remember what it was, but even Donny Long would have blushed - it was so obvious]. The judge slammed "intelligent design" as not science - and he's taken a bunch of shit for it from the right. Link to info: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/id/Again: Great episode ... Brave Judge.

Fatman - I did not see that episode, although it sounds very interesting. I actually haven't heard of this happening in PA either...that's pretty crazy. I was under the impression that church and state (who runs the schools) were supposed to be separate, but apparently that only applies some of the time.
I would be outraged if the school district tried to teach intelligent design/religion to my kids. Unless you enroll your kids in a private or church run school, there should be absolutely no mention of God or religious beliefs...what is this, 1952??

IIRC, the incident Fatty refers to happened in SW PA, near the W. VA border. The Jeebus freaks lost in the 3rd Circuit.

That must be a little bible belt area there. PBS (NOVA) had a good documentary some time back -"Intelligent Design on Trial." It covered the process by which creationists re-crafted themselves as ID'ers in order to skirt some court decisions barring them from promoting creationism in schools.

As you can see here Pat Robertson was very upset with the outcome of the school board election. He expects some time in the next thousand or so years that god will smite these people with a natural disaster because of it.

Considering that there are over 20,000 different Christian cults in the world, whose version are they suppose to teach? Then what about all the other crackpot organized religions who will want their shot?
Then these idiots have the gall to say that "America is a country founded in Christianity." Obviously they were too busy praying that the pregnancy tests showed up negative to pay attention in history class (that's a sideways dig at the Christian supported Abstinence Programs that are the only federally funded sex education programs available in public school).
I wonder how enthusiastic these American Taliban would be to tear down the separation of Church and State if the government was allowed interfere with their practice of religion as much as their religions interfere with the operation of government?
Hmmm, isn't that the reason people came here for in the first place? To avoid religious persecution. I'm not sure since I couldn't hear the teacher over the chanting fanatics outside the classroom.
