You have to admire the Danes for showing balls after all this time and all those threats. The krauts and frogs would have folded a long time ago.

Arabs Denounce Dutch Anti - Islam Film

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) -- Islamic and Arab leaders denounced a Dutch film Saturday that portrays Islam as a ticking time bomb aimed at the West, demanding international laws to prevent insults to religions.

The 15-minute film entitled ''Fitna,'' or ''ordeal'' in Arabic, by Dutch anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders brought condemnations from Muslim capitals and street protests in Pakistan after it was posted on a Web site Thursday.

The film came on the heels of the republishing in Danish papers of a cartoon of Islam's Prophet Muhammad that Muslims view as insulting.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir called on Muslims at an Arab summit in Damascus to ''challenge those who insult'' the prophet and proposed ''a binding international charter'' calling for the respect of religious beliefs.

''The offenses against our Arab and Islamic nations under the banner of freedom of expression are derogatory and defamatory and go against all human values,'' al-Bashir said.

In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit called Wilders' film ''a humiliation'' to Islam.

Wilders said he made the film because ''Islam and the Quran are dangers to the preservation of freedom in the Netherlands in the long term, and I have to warn people of that.'' It shows statements from radical clerics and cites Quranic verses interspersed with images from Sept. 11, 2001, and other terror attacks.

The European Union's 27 foreign ministers said they too objected to the film's depiction of Islam.

''This view is sharply rejected,'' they said in a joint statement released at the end of a two-day meeting in Slovenia. ''The vast majority of Muslims reject extremism and violence.''

But unlike the Arab leaders, the European ministers defended the right to freedom of speech and called on Muslims to react peacefully. ''Feeling offended is no excuse for aggression or threats,'' they said.

The Jeddah-based Organization of the Islamic Conference said the film was intended to fuel hatred of Islam and ''incite disturbances, conflicts and to threaten the security and stability of the world.''

The organization's secretary-general, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, said at the Damascus summit that the cartoons and the film only increase anti-Islamic sentiments in the West at a critical time. However, he praised the Dutch government for distancing itself from the movie.

Predominantly Muslim Malaysia has urged the Dutch government to censure Wilders, calling the film irresponsible and disrespectful to Muslims worldwide.

In a statement late Saturday, Malaysia's foreign ministry issued a statement to ''strongly condemn'' the movie.

''Portraying Islam as a religion advocating extremism is not only misleading and erroneous but also blatant disregard and utter disrespect for Islam and the sensitiveness of the Muslim world,'' Foreign Minister Rais Yatim said in the statement.

Hundreds of Muslims have demonstrated in Pakistan over the film and the country's Foreign Ministry summoned the Dutch ambassador to deliver an official complaint against what it called a ''defamatory film which deeply offended the sentiments of Muslims all over the world.''

Indeed, Omar al-Bashir being a man known throughout the world for being tolerant of other people's religious beliefs. Just ask the people of Darfur.

It's times like this where I wish I was the head of the U.N.

(U.N. phone rings) Hello, hey Omar what's happening? You want what to call for respect for what? Let me think about that for a bit. I'll tell you what it's lunchtime in New York right now let me think about it over lunch. I'll get back to you when I'm finished with my ham sandwich.

Puppet Theater, Hamas Style:

Puppet child ‘kills’ Bush on Gaza TV kids show

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Brandishing "the sword of Islam," a Palestinian boy stabs President Bush to death in revenge for American and Israeli actions in a new puppet show for children aired by Hamas-owned television in the Gaza Strip.

The show, part of a series called "Exceptionals," first aired Sunday.

In the episode, Bush, a hand-held puppet dressed in a green uniform and wearing boxing gloves, is shown talking to a Palestinian child.

The child, with tears in his voice, accuses Bush of killing his father in Iraq, his mother in Lebanon and his brothers and sisters in Gaza with the assistance of the Israelis.

"You are a criminal, Bush, a despicable man. You made me an orphan. You deprived me of everything," says the hand-held puppet.

The program was broadcast on Hamas' al-Aqsa television, which has used puppets and cartoon characters in the past to illustrate the Islamist movement's battle against Israel and opposition to U.S. support for the Jewish state.

No one was available at the station to comment on the show.

"I must take my revenge with the sword of Islam," the puppet-child says, stabbing the Bush puppet several times in the chest and ignoring pleas of "I repent, just don't kill me" — and an invitation to a toy-filled White House.

"I killed him," the puppet says, accusing Bush of being "impure" and vowing the White House would be turned into a mosque.

Last year, al-Aqsa television aired a program starring a Mickey Mouse clone, Farfur, who urged children to fight Israel in the name of Islam. Farfur was killed off, on-air, by an actor posing as an Israeli security agent.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, is shunned by the United States over its refusal to recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept existing interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals.

The group has accused the United States of backing Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip, attacks against militants that have at times caused civilian casualties.

What accuse? We DO back Israel's recent attacks in Gaza against the militants and their rockets.

Muslim leaders in Britain are outraged about a new game that calls for camouflaged players to shoot BBs at "enemy" players dressed in traditional Arab headdresses, or shemaghs.

The game's creators, however, say using the shemaghs is the "easiest way to tell who the enemy are," according to a report in the London Daily Mail.

"Any sort of game that associates guns and violence with a particular culture is clearly wrong," said Mokhtar Badri, executive member of the Muslim Association of Britain.

"They could use any other type of color or dress to tell between teams which would not cause offense," Badri is quoted in the Mail.

The Zulu-1 Tactical Airsoft Simulations game’s founders, Peter Jenkins, 41, and Darren Howells, 42, deny that using shemaghs is racist.

"We simply use the shemaghs to differentiate between teams," Jenkins is quoted in the newspaper. "Just because some terrorists decide to wear them doesn't make it racist."

Airsoft participants dress in camouflage or shemaghs and use replica machine guns, pistols and sniper rifles that fire 6 mm BBs at their opponents. The game is held at a former Royal Air Force hospital on 20 acres of land in Nocton, Lincs, England, and enthusiasts say it is safer than paintball.

More than 40 people have signed up for the game, which is expected to pit 120 players against each other over woodland, trenches and empty buildings.

According to the Zulu-1 Web site, the game is open to anyone over 16 and participants first must attend a health and safety briefing.

2 Ex-Generals Arrested in Alleged Turkey Coup Plot

Filed at 9:48 a.m. ET

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Two retired generals were jailed Sunday in connection with an alleged plot to topple Turkey's Islamic-rooted government, the highest-ranking ex-soldiers detained as part of the probe, a news report said.

The two, arrested late Saturday, were among 21 people rounded up in the past week in the investigation into an alleged pro-secular and nationalist network called ''Ergenekon,'' the state-run Anatolia news agency said.

Ret. Gen. Hursit Tolon, who once headed the paramilitary force, and former top army commander Sener Eruygur, who helped organize a series of anti-government rallies last year, were being held at an Istanbul jail.

No charges have been filed, and details about the alleged plot were sketchy Sunday. Some newspapers close to the government have said the suspects were plotting a series of events -- such as mass demonstrations and violent clashes with police -- that would lay the ground for an army takeover...

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamic-rooted party has been locked in a power struggle with secular groups supported by the military and other state institutions, including the judiciary.

Secularists see themselves as the defenders of the modern secular ideology espoused by Turkish national founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and oppose groups they say want to impose Islam on society.

Earlier in the week, the Constitutional Court heard allegations against the ruling party of anti-secular activity. The prosecutor wants the party disbanded, and Erdogan and 70 other party members banned from joining a political party for five years.

The prosecutor cited the government's attempt to permit Islamic-style head scarves at universities -- which the Constitutional Court last month ruled unconstitutional.

Erdogan's party, formed in 2001 by politicians who once belonged to Turkey's Islamic movement, denies it has an Islamic agenda, noting that it has backed reforms to help Turkey start EU membership negotiations.

The investigation into ''Ergenekon'' was launched last year after hand grenades issued to security forces were found at the Istanbul home of a retired military officer. The chairman of Ankara's chamber of commerce also was arrested Saturday, and a prominent journalist with a pro-secular newspaper was released pending trial.

Critics have denounced the arrests as an attempt to silence government opponents.

''Those who believe in Ataturk, in the secular republic are under attack,'' said Deniz Baykal, leader of the opposition Republican People's Party.
