Apparently he was too afraid/careful to use a credit card or even wire money, so he sent cash via the mail a week in advance of his meeting, and showed up with more cash for extras.

I'd say that booking and pre-paying a week in advance pretty much torpedoes the I was lonely and got trapped argument.
