A maker of adult videos is set to go on trial today on federal obscenity charges involving several of his films.

Ira Isaacs, 56, who lives in the Hollywood Hills area, does business as Stolen Car Films and LA Media, according to the federal grand jury indictment returned against him last July.

Jury selection in his trial is scheduled to begin this morning before U.S. District Judge George King in federal court in downtown Los Angeles.

Isaacs has pleaded not guilty to six counts related to interstate distribution of allegedly obscene DVDs and two counts of failing to label DVDs with the name and location of the custodian of records detailing the performers' ages and identification information.

The indictment cites several titles, including "Hollywood Scat Amateurs No. 7," and "Mako's First Time Scat," "Laurie's Toilet Show," and "Gang Bang Horse `Pony Sex Game."'

If convicted on all charges, Isaacs could be sentenced to up to 40 years in federal prison. The U.S. Justice Department is also seeking forfeiture of the allegedly obscene materials as well as any proceeds from them.

Isaacs is free on $10,000 bond.

His attorney, Roger Jon Diamond, said last year that the prosecution of his client is a political move by the Bush administration to satisfy conservatives.

"Our taxpayers should be incensed that the government is wasting its money in this area. Mr. Isaacs is not a terrorist. He distributes adult films to consenting adults," Diamond said.

The case is being prosecuted by the Justice Department's Obscenity Prosecution Task Force and a prosecutor with the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's Office.

California Man Charged With Federal Obscenity Violations
WASHINGTON – A California man has been charged by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles with operating an Internet-based obscenity distribution business and related offenses, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney George Cardona of the Central District of California announced today.

The indictment returned yesterday charges Ira Isaacs, doing business as Stolen Car Films and LA Media, with four counts of using an interactive computer service to sell and distribute obscene films on DVD, two counts of using a common carrier to distribute obscene DVDs, and two counts of failing to label sexually explicit DVDs with the name and location of the custodian of records containing age and identification information for performers in sexually explicit films. The maximum penalty is five years in prison on each count.

The court will issue a summons directing Isaacs, who is believed to reside in the Hollywood Hills, to appear in United States District Court in Los Angeles for arraignment in August. The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of all obscene materials produced and transported by Isaacs and any proceeds derived from the sale of such materials.

The charges contained in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Kenneth Whitted of the Justice Department’s Obscenity Prosecution Task Force and Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. The Task Force was formed to focus on the prosecution of adult obscenity nationwide. The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Adult Obscenity Squad, a national initiative of the FBI based in the Washington, D.C. Field Office, and agents from the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.

LOS ANGELES – The federal obscenity trial of Ira Isaacs, purveyor of such features as Gang Bang Horse 'Pony Sex Game', Mako's First Time Scat, Hollywood Scat Amateurs No. 7, BAE 20 and Laurie's Toilet Show, has been postponed until April 22, but according to his attorney Roger Jon Diamond, the case will break new ground on several different First Amendment fronts.

Of particular interest is the fact that the Department of Justice summarily dropped Counts 7 and 8 of the indictment, both dealing with violations of 18 U.S.C. §2257, the federal recordkeeping and labeling act, although Diamond termed such counts a "slam dunk" because at least two of the videos sold on Isaacs' website lacked the required 2257 information such as the producer's name and the location of the performers' identity records.

Malice posted it, but I don't think a scat pornographer's legal problem is a good way to rally the troops for free speech.
