"Bush's Last Fans -- The Evangelical Right, the Facilitators of War and a Sadly Diminished McCain Frank Schaeffer Thu Mar 13, 11:22 PM ET President Bush was on my old stomping grounds this week. Back in the early 1980s I was also the keynote speaker at the NRB (National Religious Broadcaster's) convention. According to the New York Times, (March 12, 2008): President Bush delivered a rousing defense of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on Tuesday, mixing faith and foreign policy as he told a group of Christian broadcasters that his policies in the region were predicated on the beliefs that, freedom was a God-given right and 'every human being bears the image of our maker...' Calling freedom a 'precious gift,' Mr. Bush said: 'The liberty we value is not ours alone. Freedom is not America's gift to the world; it is God's gift to all humanity.' His words were punctuated by shouts of 'Amen.' *** On the same day as the NRB/Bush story quoted above was published the Times also happened to report that William J. Fallon, the commander of American forces in the Middle East whose outspoken public statements on Iran and other issues put him at odds with the Bush administration, is retiring early. Admiral Fallon upset the Bush administration with comments that according to the Times; "emphasized diplomacy over conflict in dealing with Iran, that endorsed further troop withdrawals from Iraq beyond those already under way and that suggested the United States had taken its eye off the military mission in Afghanistan." A senior administration official said that Fallon's comments, "left the perception he had a different foreign policy than the president." As he has for the last eight years Bush disregards the advice of his military leaders when they don't agree with him. (Disclosure: My son volunteered for the Marines in 1999 and served in Bush's wars so this is personal.) As if answering admiral Fallon In his NRB speech Bush said; "The decision to remove Saddam Hussein was the right decision... It is the right decision at this point in my presidency, and it will forever be the right decision." These days most Americans would have booed Bush's statement, but not the right wing evangelicals at the religious broadcasters convention. *** The rest of us, including many moderate Christians, aren't laughing. We know that we've had eight years of failed Republican/Bush misrule-by-fear that's produced a war in Iraq without end, and that risks losing the war in Afghanistan, and that has given us an American president instigating -- and even defending -- torture. After he was cheered Bush returned the favor. He praised the broadcasters and promised to veto any legislation that would reinstitute the so-called "fairness doctrine," which once required broadcasters to give air time to opposing views. Bush has also done what he can to slow a congressional investigations into the larceny that typifies the many "successful" religious broadcasters with their "nonprofit" twenty-thousand square foot homes, jets and fleets of luxury cars. *** The irony is that the people McCain is appeasing these days in order to "unite" his party, are the same people who in 2000, spread (and believed) the racist nonsense about his black adopted child being illegitimate etc. The people he must suck up to now undid his candidacy then. The sad truth is that the 2000 election was McCain's moment. The right wing evangelicals (and the Republican establishment) handed the presidency to Bush and the rest is history. Now McCain's moment has past, swept away by a river of needlessly shed blood and by the politics of fear. Any group that--post-Iraq five years on, and post-our failure to secure Afghanistan six years on -- is still being willingly influenced by the likes of the religious broadcasters such as James Dobson etc., along with their secular fellow travelers such as Rush Limbaugh, William Kristol, Ann Coulter and the rest of the proponents of global war without end, should be beyond the pale. Any candidate that must cater to the fundamentalists (some of whom belong to the National Religious Broadcasters) who are saying that Barack Obama is a Muslim and/or that he might even be the Antichrist! -- should be repudiated. This is the company that McCain now must keep. Independent voters, moderate evangelicals, other religious believers and nonbelievers, Democratic Party members and authentically conservative Republicans must work to make sure that either McCain stands up to the evangelical right or that he loses. It's long past time that McCain's old enemies and now his new "friends" -- inherited from Bush, and otherwise known as the "Republican base"--are sent packing. The rest of us have a job to do: undoing the damage done to our country by the born-again president whose miserable presidency was brought into existence by and aided and abetted by the religious right. Barring some unlikely radical reform of the Republican Party before November, the best thing that could happen to the Republican Party is to lose. Then they might have a chance to repent and change. The lesson is this: 4000 American war dead, 40,000 wounded, countless killed Iraqis and our country in hock to the Chinese (and other lenders) tells us that next time the religious right likes a presidential candidate vote for the other guy. And if you hear those religious broadcasters cheering be afraid, be very afraid." http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20080314/cm_huffpost/091266

The only real difference between Catholics and Baptists is the Catholics will say "Hello" when they run in to each other at the liquor store.

The original joke is about Baptists and Methodists. Catholics drink like fish, so the joke really doesn't work with Catholics in it.

Hence the Catholics say hello to their fellow parishioners, whilst the Baptist duck and hide their faces in shame, but go to the liquor store none the less.

Liun's right on this one, H2C. It's a very old joke.
I was going to post a few examples, but ...
Just google the words: baptists methodists liquor store
You'll bring up more than enough hits to see it's true.

Yes, but repressed Catholics share most of the same beliefs as the repressed Baptists, with the biggest exception being alcohol. Hence the hilarity in the hypocrisies. Methodists makes no sense in that joke.
edited to add:
I don't give a shit about the way you heard the joke, I told it the way I've heard it, and it definitely sounds like you haven't run into the Methodists that I have. Fucking carpet baggers.

Alabama Baptists Butthurt Over "Wine Trail
Quote:
It's not just wine that draws scorn in conservative Alabama, where more than a third of the state's counties remain dry 75 years after Prohibition and Southern Baptist churches claim about a quarter of the state's population.
The state regulates all alcohol sales, and it drew criticism in October for opening a state-run liquor store in downtown Birmingham on a Sunday afternoon. The governor intervened, and the agency said it wouldn't happen again.

Seems he took $$$ from a notorious Domestic Bomber:Fact check: Obama and former radicalSPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama is defending his relationship with William Ayers, a college professor who was once part of the radical Weather Underground and spent years as a fugitive after a 1970 explosion that killed three members. Obama suggests he barely knows Ayers and shouldn't be held accountable for anything Ayers said or did. But others, including Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, say the relationship gives Republicans an issue to exploit against Obama. The spin:Obama was asked about Ayers as part of a discussion of his patriotism in a presidential debate Wednesday night in Philadelphia. Obama responded that Ayers is "a guy who lives in my neighborhood" but hasn't endorsed him and doesn't regularly exchange ideas with him... Clinton seized on Ayers as "an issue that certainly the Republicans will be raising." She pointed out that Obama and Ayers served on a charity board together and brought the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks into the mix by noting that an interview in which Ayers denied any regret for the radical group's bomb-making happened to appear on the day of the attacks. The facts:Ayers was part of the Weather Underground, a radical group that claimed credit for explosions at the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and more. Originally known as the Weathermen, the group took its name from a Bob Dylan lyric: "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows." In 1970, a bomb the group was making — to use against an Army base — exploded at a New York townhouse, killing three members. Ayers fled and spent years as a fugitive. He met and married fellow fugitive Bernadine Dohrn during that period. The two surfaced in 1980... Ayers now teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Dohrn heads the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University. Ayers has advised Chicago Mayor Richard Daley on education issues. Ayers and Obama both served on the board of directors of the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based charity that focuses on developing community groups to assist the poor. A variety of business executives, journalists and academics serve on the board. When Obama was organizing his first race for the state legislature, the incumbent lawmaker he hoped to replace introduced him to her supporters and urged them to back Obama. One introductory event took place at the home of Ayers and Dohrn. Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's legislative campaign in 2001...SOURCE+ + + Today's New York Times also has this nifty little quote: (George Stephanopoulos and Hillary Clinton) also referred to statements by Mr. Ayers in an article in The New York Times on Sept. 11, 2001, that Mrs. Clinton said were “deeply hurtful to people in New York.”
“I don’t regret setting bombs,” Mr. Ayers said then. “I feel we didn’t do enough.”+ + + Indeed.

Ayers is an asshat but I'm not going to crucify Obama because Ayers donated $200 to his campaign.
$200 towards the cost of campaigning for the office of U.S. Senator=a drop of piss into a bucket approximately the same size as Yellowstone National Park.

Yeah, but Bam-Bam is the one who's prancing around pretending to be Holier-Than-Thou.
More importantly, it's not like he got blindsided by the contribution: He knew full well who Ayers was when he took the money, and took it anyway. $200 or $2,000, he knowingly took money from an admitted domestic terrorist who, to this day, is unrepentant about his actions. In my book, there ain't no difference between him and Tim McVey.

Sorry, Gunker, but to me, knowingly taking money from a terrorist who wishes he'd planted more bombs is a real issue. It's not a question of electibility, or elitism. It's a basic question of right or wrong, and Bam-Bam failed that test miseably.
But I give you credit, Gunker: At least you didn't try to make the inane arguement that it doesn't matter as long as it doesn't hurt the guy's poll ratings. Funny, I thought that's what Bam-Bam was always accusing the Clintons of doing.
Oh, and by the way:

There is the minor detail that one still has a pulse while the other does not.
You can thank a Clinton for the fact that one of 'em is pushing up daisies. You know Bam-Bam wouldn't have the stones to do it.

How about this as an explanation. He's the anti-Reagan.
Reagan picked up "Reagan Democrats" by telling the embitterred whatever they wanted to hear, as often as they wanted to hear it. Along with the pabulum of "morning in America" they were fed the nonsense of the Christian right until they equated the two just like Pavlov's dog and the bell.
Nearly 30 years after his election win, Republicans are still looking for a moutainside to carve Reagan's face into, and trying to exploit the same prejudices (yes, I said prejudices) that Reagan's handlers took advantage of.
Obama claims to be running a campaign on the basis that he is trying to break the paradigm of bullshit, often to his own detriment. One example is the unique way he LIMITS his own campaign contributions. Another way might be by telling the truth, even if it is not popular. Interestingly Romney tried to do the same thing (in a slightly different way), and is now on the sidelines because of it.
His comments in San Francisco were a "gaffe" in the true sense of the word - "Accidentally telling the truth".

What exactly are we arguing about?
It comes down to a (more or less) continuation of the past 8 years (McCain) or something different (Obama/Clinton).
I prefer something different, and will go further, to insist upon voting Democrat for all seats of Representatives and Senate.
And then, once they are held accountable, hold the "conservative" Democrats accountable, and vote them out with young, progressive, Iraqi War vets in 2010.
And then, maybe nationalized health care will be established, preventing 50% of personal bankruptcies.
And then an establishment of a progressive tax rate, where, after your first five million, the additional millions are taxed at a high rate to fix up that $9 trillion national debt and pay for the airlifted coffins of the poor...
Some of those might have to dump their KBR/Blackwater/Titan holdings...so be it...
