In retrospect and in fairness, it should also be said that Jeff Davis, Alex Stephens and Robert Barnwell Rhett sold the same snake oil to their countrymen. Both the Kaiser and George V were hawking it to their subjects in 1914. In fact, with the exception of the Second World War, I can't recall a single instance where a nation's leaders and it's leading journalists did not offer the same tired bromides to their people at the start of a military conflict. Just goes with the territory.
