Lots of buzz on this one:
"Weeds is turning into the gateway program for cable dramas about drug dealers.
Breaking Bad is AMC's answer to Showtime's well-received series starring Mary-Louise Parker as a suburban marijuana entrepreneur. The question is, will America be as receptive to a meth-dealing dad as they are to a pot-selling mom?
The bigger question is, why should America be as receptive? Reefer Madness-level hysteria aside, marijuana by itself is relatively benign. There is no such thing as social, recreational use of crystal meth. It kills and it's not a pretty death. Attempting to make a series lead and sympathetic character of someone involved in this lethal trade is an odd choice. AMC is segueing from Mad Men to bad men.
The contrast between Weeds and Breaking Bad includes the tones of the two series. Weeds has dark moments but is basically a lighthearted spoof. Breaking Bad is as heavy as lung cancer — that's the affliction that drives a nerdy high school chemistry teacher into the dark, violent underworld of producing and selling crystal meth."
