Yeah, people rarely walk on the "up" esculator. Although, tons of people walk on the "down" esculator. I can't say I blame the people who just stand on the "up" esculator, though. Walking on an esculator that is moving upwards is actually more work than walking up a normal flight of stairs. The motion of the esculator carrying you upwards actually adds gravity and requires more effort to walk on.

On the flipside, when walking on an esculator moving downwards it takes much less effort because gravity actually aids you in the situation.
