The second painting you're talking about is the famous Las Meninas by Diego Velasquez one of the great works of the late renaissance, which arguably bridges the eras to modernism (cf. Manet) (painted in 1656)
There have been many (100s) of articles and books written about this painting, which has been called one of the great works in the history of European painting.
