LOS ANGELES - Police were called to Britney Spears' home Thursday night in a custodial dispute that lasted nearly three hours before an intoxicated Spears reportedly turned over her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Officers were called to the home around 8 p.m., and the 26-year-old singer turned over the children around 10:50 p.m., Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman, told City News Service.

Aerial footage from KTLA-TV showed Spears being lifted in a gurney into an ambulance. It was unclear where she was being taken.

Lee said Spears was under the influence of an unknown substance, and no injuries were reported.

The incident involved a family dispute that police worked to resolve "peacefully by court order," he said.

An Associated Press photographer outside the gated community that includes Spears' house saw six police cars, an ambulance and a fire truck enter around 10:30 p.m. A dispatcher with the fire department referred calls to the police department.

Spears and Federline are fighting over custody of their sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Federline, 29, has temporary custody of the children because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders. The two were married in October 2004 and divorced in July.

Calls to attorneys for Federline and Spears were not immediately returned.

Earlier Thursday, the singer appeared for a deposition in the custody dispute.

She was deposed for just 14 minutes, attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told reporters after she left.

Spears called in sick for a Dec. 12 court-ordered deposition, but was photographed that day driving with a friend. She also didn't show up for a session Wednesday, Kaplan said.

Spears' attorneys from the firm Trope and Trope on Wednesday filed a court motion asking to be relieved due to a "breakdown" in communication with their client.

Kaplan said Spears' attorneys were present for what became a very abbreviated session.

"The deposition proceeding did go forward today. It was scheduled for 9:45 to 11:45," Kaplan said. "However, it wasn't able to commence until 11:32."

"You can imagine in 14 minutes there's not a lot of time to develop questions," he said.

Kaplan said another deposition would be scheduled.

Britney SpearsUPDATE: Britney has arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told as she was brought out of the ambulance, she flipped off the waiting paparazzi. Oh my god that Britney's shameless.

OMG THE DRAMA! TMZ is there as Britney Spears was just wheeled out of her home on a gurney by paramedics! Why god why?!?

We're told Britney is being taken to a local hospital on a "medical hold" -- essentially a mental evaluation. Cops found her earlier this evening at her home under the influence of an "unknown substance."

Cops were called to the popnightmare's home in Beverly Hills this evening after she reportedly refused to return custody of her two kids back over to their father's bodyguard. Oh the insanity of it all!

Damn. LOL. I thought I had the shit, but WOW!! Just wow...

There's nothing left of Shitney's life that shocks me anymore. That's the sad thing. She could have had the ambulance stop at Starbucks for some Frapps and I wouldn't be shocked. But goddamnit I WANT MORE BRITNEY DRAMA EVERYDAYYYYY! Do not disapoint me, 2008.

Warning to everyone: if you see Britney Spears on the streets, do not talk to her. She will bite!

The mother of two, who won't be doing much mothering any time soon, continues to make headlines with her crazy behavior.

Sunday afternoon, Unfitney paid a visit to the Betsey Johnson store at the Westfield Fashion Square mall in Sherman Oaks, where she and paparazzo boy toy Adnan Ghalib caused quite a commotion.

Brit Brit grabbed dresses from the racks and disappeared into a dressing room with Adnan.

Moments later, Spears came out completely naked, shocking salesclerks, Life & Style reports.

"I was blown away. Britney's private parts were right in front of me!" a store employee tells the mag.

It's not like we haven't all seen it already!

"I grabbed a dress to cover her and she screamed, 'Get away from me! Don't you fucking come near me!' says the employee. "Then she disappeared in the dressing room with Adnan for 45 minutes. They were making weird noises. It was disgusting."

She was probably farting in his face. He likes that.

When Britney and Adnan finally stumbled out, Spears mumbled something unintelligible. "I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She was slurring and spitting, and talking with a British accent," says the employee. "Her face was covered with cold sores and acne, and her scalp was patchy. I wanted to help her, but she was so mean that I left her alone. Then she muttered, 'Fuck you!' and left the store."

She sure knows how to make a dramatic exit!

After aggressive paparazzi prompted police to escort Britney Spears to the hospital this week, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine announced Friday that he plans to push for an ordinance that would create a minimum "personal safety zone" around individuals targeted by the media.

Zine said the estimated $25,000 it cost for police to escort Spears to the hospital was necessary to protect the public from dangers posed by the horde of celebrity photographers pursuing the pop star. He said paparazzi wereincreasingly endangering celebrities and bystanders with their aggressive behavior and car pursuits.

"I don't want a repeat of what happened to Princess Diana with a celebrity in Los Angeles," he said. "We had to have 12 officers escort [Spears] to the hospital that if not for paparazzi would have been used to prevent crime somewhere else."

Zine said he plans to introduce a motion that calls for the city attorney and LAPD to draft new restrictions on paparazzi, including an ordinance that would create a zone of clear space in order to protect public safety on streets, sidewalks and at access points to emergency care facilities and private businesses and homes.

"It is a major issue we have to address. We are in a celebrity town," he said. "Celebrities have a right to live in peace and freedom."

But Police Chief William J. Bratton said existing laws can deal with the paparazzi.

"Councilman Zine is responding to frustration we all have with the paparazzi," Bratton said. "We already have appropriate laws within the constitutional guidelines and we intend to do that whether it is erratic driving, trespassing on private property or any action that goes beyond the constitutional rights to cover a story."

Bratton strongly defended the LAPD decision to deploy a dozen officers to escort Spears, saying she is a resident of the city and is "certainly in great need of assistance."

He said the public should blame the paparazzi for this week's events.

"They are the ones making a spectacle of themselves," Bratton said. "We will do what we need to do to protect the public from this cast of characters."

Representatives for Spears told Los Angeles police officials Monday that they believed she needed a psychiatric evaluation because of continuing erratic behavior. After extensive discussions about alternatives, the LAPD mapped a strategy for getting her to UCLA Medical Center amid an anticipated swarm of paparazzi.

The next morning the plan was executed with about two dozen police officers, a helicopter and a special team that took Spears out through a gate in an ambulance with covered windows to shield her from photographers.

Meanwhile, a Los Angeles County court commissioner Friday granted Spears' father, James, and a court-appointed attorney temporary conservatorship over her affairs and estate, said Allan Parachini, a court spokesman.

The decision gives James Spears the ability to make decisions involving his daughter's assets, property and medical care, restrict visitors to her home, change locks at her residence and hire security. It also allows him to seek civil restraining orders, which the court issued against Spears' manager and friend, Sam Lutfi.

Parachini said another hearing will be held Monday in which the commissioner will decide whether to extend the orders.

"In essence, her parents got what they wanted," Parachini said.
