Even if you do't give a shit about the environment, it's a great way to push the burden of getting the tree out of the house on someone else.

My town always selects a location near city hall for locals to drop off their used Christmas trees. The town uses them on our beaches as sand dune starters to help reduce beach erosion during the winter. I give them my tree annually.

I usually sink mine in the pond to provide habitat. Fish love them. The drought we're in this year has exposed three or four years worth.

I sort of recycle, I started a tradition about 2 years ago; our next door neighbor is a stoner, and it's fun to fuck with his mind... we started replanting our xmas tree in his yard, we sneak over at night plant it smack dab in the middle of the yard, I kid you not, last year it lasted 5 months, looked pretty good too.

This year I'm thinking of doing something more festive, and just leave all the junk on the tree.

The League of Industrious, Functionally Alcoholic Homeless bums of Hartford take anyone's tree and use it to construct their annual after-christmas Winter Village in a city owned field next to the graveyard in Downtown that had all the corpses wash away in 1937 when the Great Connecticut River flooded for the 28th time since Thomas Jefferson croaked.

They use the small logs and copious branches from the dead christmas tree to build a series of makeshift "lean tos", and a number of small Dog House-like cabins that jussssst fit a man for sleeping. I usually provide several hundred dollars along with my dead tree(s) so that they may throw themselves one helluva a block party when this environmentally friendly version of a shanty town is finished....the cops let them stay there until April when Little League begins.

Tax deductible you ask? You bet your ass....

I tried slash and burn last year - took until May to get the smoke-smell out of the sofa cushions.
