Quote:
Hugh Hefner helped make the world of porn possible, but has he outlived his usefulness?
No.
A long time ago, Charles Schulz created the "Peanuts" comic strip. He was very innovative: He created child characters who spoke intelligently and had real problems. He came up with animals who think and created the convention where somebody writes on paper and the words appear at the top of the panel.
In time, his innovations were adopted into comics in general and "Peanuts" was no longer a trendsetter.
Hugh Hefner is in the same situation. The girl-next-door as nude model was Hefner's innovation, and so was the casual sexuality that he encouraged. We all caught up with Hef -- and for most people reading this, the job was done before you were born -- so he doesn't seem innovative any more.
And maybe he isn't.
But as a pioneer in the sexual revolution, he deserves our respect. Because without him, things could have developed in a completely different direction.
