After a really gay afternoon at the Santa Claus parade yesterday we popped into a tabacanist to look for Djarum clove cigarettes. While trying to decide which kind to get a small metal tin caught my eye and the lady who runs the store told me about the history of snuff.

I had a bad experience with chewing tobacco as a teen and have avoided the product in anything but cigarettes or the odd cigar, but this is really pleasant. My sinuses are clear and there is a subdued euphoria I experience when focusing my eyes on anything for several minutes after inhaling it. Even my cat allergies aren't bothering me. My wife and I may use it in moderation to curb our cravings and quit smoking.

Clove cigarettes.. I've often wondered who actually smokes those things. I don't mind snuff every now and then, although, since I'm not particularly keen on my nostril looking like a poorly-wiped arsehole, I wouldn't make a habit of taking it.
There's a Scandinavian tobacco product that you just put under your top lip and let sit on your gum. It's preferable to chewing tobacco as you don't feel you need to spit all the time. The Scandies call it snus, not sure whether you have that in the States.
Nothing beats a cigarette though.

I read a bit about snus yesterday while learning more about my new hobby. It seems it is becoming increasingly hard to purchase in parts of Europe, so I doubt I would have much luck finding it in Ontario, but I'll keep my eyes open. The clove cigs are nice for a change, but too many will give you a headache. And if you're gonna try them, stick to Djarum and stay the hell away from Bidis. Even I won't smoke those, and I've been known to be pretty eclectic in my smoking habits.

I think snus has been linked to mouth cancer so perhaps that's why it's become less popular. It was still pretty common in Norway last time I was there. Definitely worth a try if you find some.

You're too young to remember, but, in the context of the 1980s, there were a lot stupider things than that.

I've tried every form of tobacco out there. I started by sneaking cigarettes. My old man smoked a pipe too, so I could load a bowl and smoke it in the garage when no one was home with little risk of getting caught. To save money I bought a manual rolling machine and pouches of Bugler tobacco (with papers) for less than cigarettes by the pack. I rolled some of the old mans pipe tobacco in one of my papers once- bad, bad mistake.

I chewed Redman and Levi Garrett chewing tobacco when I was 13-14 or so in addition to smoking the odd Marlboro red and Bugler home-rolleds. The worst I ever tried was a plug of something called "Red Juice", because some toothless old-timer sold it to me.

I graduated to Marlboro Reds and started dipping Copenhagen Snuff in places where smoking was frowned on. Weird shit that snuff- it's like mainlining nicotine.

I went to college and having nasty bits of brown shit in my teeth was no longer cool, so I gave up the Copenhagen. A hot girlfriend turned me onto Camels and I smoked enough of those to fill a tractor trailer in ensuing years. I would have smoked Camel Filters in my sleep if someone would've held them in my mouth for me.

During those years I met my Austrian buddy who introduced me to his curly cigars and a devilish Rube Goldbergesque snuff machine that propels coarse-ground snuff up your nostril with much fanfare. I introduced him to Makers Mark Bourbon. He got the best out of that deal.

I gave up tobacco in all forms a couple years ago and I'm glad I did.

Anyway, I'm typing all this to say with all my experience with tobacco at NO TIME did I think it might be cool to be seen in public holding a pipe.
