If they were ever involved in a case where they were called to give testimony you can bet your last dollar the defense would attack their credibility as witnesses ("how can we believe what they say? After all they make porn!").
That might not work in SF. And, the jury might not like it if they see it as an attempt to distract from the issues at hand. But most prosecutors don't want "tainted" police officers anywhere around a jury.
This is why police departments won't hire felons. It's not that they're trying to protect citizens or take some moral high ground - it's that an officer with a criminal record is useless as a trial witness and can't be sent out for any sort of patrol.
