In the past Phelps campaigned for Al Gore and tried to win the Democratic nomination for governor twice. He has also been honored by the NAACP. The Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act was signed by Bush in response to Phelps's activities. No one on either side of the political aisle wants him in their camp. Hurts them with the Swedish and Irish voting block in addition to the gay one.
