Over $90,000 was paid to the landlord, Ventura-Louise LLC, in advance of the move. Only after the doors opened did the hostility begin. "Dean Sussman has put in a remarkable effort to open LA Exotique," explains Nick Manning. "He carefully met with the zoning executives and it was determined that we were a lingerie store and not even classified as an adult bookstore. We have diligently adhered to the guidelines provided to us by the zoning board." Among the troubles, Dean Sussman was informed by the delay in having their sign for the store delivered came from Ventura-Louise LLC. The store has been inundated with threatening phone calls from attorneys and individuals impersonating police and city councilmen. Manning's lease allows him the opportunity to sublease the unused portion of LA Exotique. Adding insult to injury, Ventura-Louise LLC has rejected every potential tenant Nick Manning has submitted. While business has been excellent, the harassment is wearing on Manning's nerves. "It's obvious that they are just making life difficult because I'm an adult film star. I vow to fight this censorship, keep my store open, and adhere to the business plan that we shared with everyone involved prior to opening our store." They don't hook up with partners, because there's no advantage to it. The tax implications of a partnership alone make them rediculous. If you thought you were going to buy the winning lottery ticket, would you line up investors? Or would you buy the ticket yourself? Business is the same. People solicit investors (stockholders) for three reasons. (1) They don't have the capital required to launch themselves, or (2) they are not sure the concept is going to be successful and they want to hedge their bets, and (3) They are looking to cash out at the top of the growth curve. Which reason was Mannings? Since he's just getting started, it is either #1 or #2. In either case, in Scottsdale they're call him a douchbag 30K milli.

So, Morimoto looks to open his own US restaurant. Oddly enough he solicits several investment partners. Is this evidence that he doesn't have enough money to open the restaurant on his own? Is this evidence that he doesn't have confidence in his own success? Or is it evidence that he would like to use the risk of others capital in an attempt to make money without risking his own assets? I have NO IDEA if Manning has ANY MONEY or if he really would have NO business without them. But, generally your theory that having co-investors is evidence of a lack of resources does not hold. Morimoto solicited investment because it costs upwards of a million dollars to open a trendy restaurant *AND* their is an extremely high failure rate. So, did Morimoto need the money because he didn't have a million? Or, was he aware that retaurants fail at an alarming rate? Spielburg solicits investments because he is smart enough not to rink his own capital as generally movies are a bad investment. Films are so expensive to bring to the screen that some films that gross $50 million are considered flops. Trump and Murdoch use banks to lower exposure to risk. God forbid they use up any of their capital. Buffett only invests in companies that are a good value for the long term. He's made billions reducing his exposure by including other investors in his fund.

Did he bring partners into the business because he lacked sufficient starting capital? The $100K or so he claims was invested in start-up is pretty small for someone who claims to be a multi-millionare. A multi-millionare would have access to credit in excess of the start-up costs and could even put it on a black card if they wanted to go for maximum rewards points. Would a Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, or even a Morimoto need to raise additional capital if they were investing under $200K? I think not. Or, did Nicky bring partners into the business because he lacked expertise in running the business and wasn't sure and, given his limited knowledge, wanted to hedge his bet? Most of the big-time investors you mentioned would not even bother attempting to run a business. They'd HIRE the best talent they could find, not enter into a partnership.

Since I either try an shut down or save troubled businesses for a living (depending on who pays me), I generally agree with this, and would add to it the fourth concept of personal friendships. Lots of people will try and hook onto college buddies for business investments, partly because they know the "climate of amicability" is a lot longer than taking on some VC money, and because they know a "friend/investor" is less likely to demand the cost of capital return that the private market generally requires, i.e. 20% annually. Since I doubt Manning is as educated as he pretends to be, I doubt he has a good handle on most basic business concepts, like keeping your landlord happy by paying the rent. I once struck up a conversation with a porn agent and floated the idea of offering financial planning services to their whores. We both gently laughed this idea away as a total waste of time...for every Sommalier Samson there are 200 washed-up, broke Sophia Lynns.
