MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon detectives this morning are searching for two masked men who walked into the city's only topless bar armed with guns and escaped with about $30,000 in cash.
No one was hurt during the brazen Sunday morning robbery, police said.
Mount Vernon police Commissioner David Chong said investigators are baffled about how the men were able to walk into the bar through the front door of Sue's Rendezvous at 4:40 a.m. Sunday when the bar is supposed to be closed at 4 a.m.
"We are looking into that," Chong said.
Chong said police received a call from the 96 Gramatan Ave. topless bar reporting the robbery short after it happened. When they arrived the 30-year-old manager told police that he and four other employees were in a back office with two bartenders when the two gunman walked in.
The robbers were wearing masks and brandishing handguns.
They demanded that the employees put money from a safe and a desk draw into a garbage bag they were carrying. After about $30,000 was dumped into the bag, they ran out of the bar and headed north bound on Gramatan Avenue.
"We are investigating this and following up on some leads that we have," said Chong. "The problem we have is how do two people walk into a bar through the front door that is supposed to be closed at 4 a.m."
One of the suspects is described as a black man, 6-foot-3. He was 250 to 300 pounds. He wore a black hoodie and dark jeans.
The second suspect is described as a black man, 5-foot-10, wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans.
