Last night, fires started in Malibu, Canyon Country, Oxnard, Topanga and other areas. They're only 12% contained; some zero %. Why hasn't anyone discussed this yet when some of our friends live in these areas? Isn't anyone worried? Btw, Holly and family are ok since the winds are in the opposite direction for now. They've evacuated the horses and are unloading their office.

I had heard about the fires but did not know they were this out of hand. Aren't there fires every year in Los Angeles?

I think Jeff & Sandy have a place in Malibu and so does Tricia I think.
Best of luck to you and anyone else affected by this disaster. I can't imagine losing my home.

Yes, I just saw it on the news this morning, and whenever someone mentions Malibu, I think of the Randall Ranch.  I had no idea Tricia and Jeff had places there, but I wish them all the best too.

Some other pictures show the most spectacular orange skies I've seen since I worked at a chemical plant.

Fuck, i went through this bullshit so many times from 1992 through 2004 with places I had in Glendale and Pasadena...not so much fires every year obviously, but the threat of them. There was one Huge fire on a Hill in Glendale in 1996 that was within a 1/4 mile of my house, but it was stopped by the 2 fwy and a bunch of Armenians pissing off the overpass onto the flames. I am sure one of them has starred in a Pissmops scene since then...
But seriously folks, the drought along with the Santa Ana winds is the worst possible combo. I remember every year my nostrils being totally dried and my eyes stuck shut in the morning because there was 0 moisture in the air when the winds blew.
I hope the Randalls are ok....this is why living in New England this time of year rocks...what's my biggest worry? Besides the saps dripping on my cute little cabin in Vermont, my yards are covered with dead leaves. As soon as the dude I hired makes them into piles, I will be playing in them with my nieces and nephews.

Hey guys... Just got back into the city from Malibu Canyon. I have been there since Sunday, when my mom called me at 6 AM, hysterical because she was in Fresno at a horse show and my brother was the only one at the ranch. This was the closest the fires have come to our house since we've lived there-- it was fucking scary. There was one point when we were packing up the office (and we have 2,800 folders of chromes, dating from the late 70s) and the smoke started to billow out from behind the ridge right above our office. That was when I really started to panic and I was sure we'd have to leave. Thankfully the Santa Anas blew the fire away from us and down towards the ocean. Our biggest fear was the wind changing direction-- then we would have been fucked. I have some great photos but since they're on my brother's camera, I won't be able to get them until the internet goes back up in Malibu, and who knows when that will be? This again strengthens my argument that we need to move the office into the city.

On a lighter note do you think you can photograph beautiful pictures of sasha grey burning in the fires? I know only a randall could do the pictures justice.

Funny, I always just assumed your main studios/offices were in the city, and that the photos at the ranch were just jaunts to "the country." My knowledge of LA is limited, but I pictured it to be the equivalent of driving up to Westchester here in NYC.
Really glad you're OK. How have others fared? What about Jeff and Sandy?

Any idea how long this is supposed to last? My dad's scheduled to fly to L.A. next week to visit his brother-in-law. He's 74 and watches too much news and he's kinda freaked about flying alone right now.

I had to come back to la early and got caught in a sandstorm on the 15S a few hours before the fire. My window and paint is fucked, but hey, life could be worse. The fires at Lake Arrowhead won't be contained until 10/31. My friend has a cabin there and has no idea of its state.
The Staglianos live in Malibu and their house is unharmed.

The Yellowstone megavolcano is overdue to blow. They haven't ruled out Friday.  Tomorrow, a speeding rock the size of Manhattan will be 1 day closer to its inevitable collision with the Earth. Cheers!

San Diego - The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors in central San Diego to make an appointment to donate blood. The fires caused the cancellation of all Red Cross blood drives in San Diego County today (10/23) and tomorrow (10/24) , resulting in a loss of nearly 200 units of blood. Blood is needed for hospital patients throughout San Diego County, including those who have suffered burns in the fires.

Tuesday afternoon from Willow Glen Dr, Rancho San Diego [ about 15 min from my apt ]. Two hours later this area was ordered to evacuate.   Helicopters were taking water from the Cottonwood Golf Course.  KFMB's Shawn Styles in the shit. He's no Stan Miller!  A few blocks from Casa de Hyde.  The parking lot of the Westfield Plaza mall on Fletcher looked like a refugee camp. It was packed with RVs. This fucking fire seems unstoppable, and the thought that we might have to evacuate is giving me an ulcer. I honestly don't know where the fuck we'd go. My gut tells me we wont have to though. El Cajon is usually spared His Unholy Wrath... living here being indignity enough.

I heard something on the radio last night about some local news reporter who set his own house on fire as a research project for his story about the fire department's response time. Is there any truth to this or is this another urban legend like Lockwood's heterosexuality?

My studio is in LA, but my office is on my parents'. The reason is pretty much so that my dad only has to walk down the path to work, and my mom can ride her horses all day, letting one graze next to the front door while she goes in to order people around. 
I also hope Jeff is OK! I don't know exactly where he lives, but thank goodness it's not San Diego, which has fared so much worse that the rest of us.
We have a place on Carbon Beach but we dont live there. On Sunday the fire burned right up the the buildings across the street (PCH) from our place, but that was it.
