Well, I like to think of myself as a somewhat decent guy and do have sympathy for people who have went through rough times. I do not believe that it gives people a free pass for mistakes they make five, ten, or even twenty years down the road.

You had it rough as a kid? I understand, but that does not excuse the fact that you have a serious drug problem now(or whatever else you are blaming your upbringing on). Take responsibility for your own damn life.
