Isn't the Nobe Peace Prize supposed to be about actually bringing peace--negociating treaties, etc. It seems like it's become a prize for any big good will mission.

This Article points out that, historically, winning the nobel is the death knell for an American politician's career. The only one who has tried a comeback after winning was Teddy Roosevelt, in 1912. And he lost to Woodrow Wilson (who would also win the Nobel.)

Teddy was also shot during that campaign.

The bullet was in his chest and he continued his speech.

I seriously doubt TR could get elected Dogcatcher today. He was too real.

Have you read either of the Morris books. The first was much better, but Theodore Rex was still good.

No question about that. I was thinking about maybe Edwards gagging through his speech while hoping his Dippity-Do was in place.

I've only read RISE OF..., which is definitely excellent. Never tried REX. I really liked TR's own natural history stuff, HUNTING TRIPS and especially AFRICAN GAME TRAILS.

Never read the natural history stuff. Read his biographies of Gouvernor Morris and Thomas Hart Benton, and about half of his History of New York.

The problem with reading TR's own works is that they're written in that bombastic, 19th Century style; tend to get tedious after a while.

You can get just about all of his works from Googlebooks.

The style issues may be why AFRICAN GAME TRAILS in particular still works. His politically incorrect tone and endlessly brutal tales of animal murder are still pretty unnerving. The political and social histories end up dated to varying degrees, while the travel memoirs are still generally vibrant, living documents.

It doesn't seem to meet the criteria set forth in Alfred Nobel's will:

Strange how the people who have benefitted the most from "bringing awareness to" global warming are the people whose first name is Al and whose last name is Gore. Global warming is a panicmongering campaign started by a group of guilt stricken pansies who go fetal at the thought of actual contentment and happiness. What a scam, declare and write a conclusion and then go out and look for evidence to support it, while systematically ignoring any evidence that does not support this theory. The schmucks that fall for this are dumber than Bush.

I disagree, although I do believe certain alarmists have exaggerated the extent of the problem.

I also believe that global warming awareness is not something that qualifies one for the Nobel Peace Prize. And for the record, I campaigned for Gore during the New Hampshire Primary in 2000.

Yes yet another American politician who won that shit…except Carter actually won it more for what it was intended-

2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner…James Earl (Jimmy) Carter, Jr.- "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development".

Humans have a slight effect on the climate but the global warmers have exaggerated this effect like Lockwood has exaggerated his own importance. So yes I do think it is a lie, in fact a local meteorologist with about 30 experience called it the biggest global scam ever a couple of days ago during a local newscast. I find it interesting that so many people who have no use for religion treat Gore's books and movies the same way Falwell treated the Bible.

"WASHINGTON, DC, February 2, 2007 (ENS) - This morning in Paris, hundreds of scientists from around the world released a report showing that global warming is accelerating, that human activity is responsible for this warming, and that it is likely irreversible for centuries, even if greenhouse gas emissions are stabilized.

The report, entitled "The Physical Science Basis: a Summary for Policymakers," was adopted in a line-by line review by the governments of 113 countries, including the United States" - http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/feb2007/2007-02-02-01.asp

Local meteorologists with about 30 years in just LOCAL experience are called worthless.

I like Gore. I worked on his campaign (though I really wanted Bradley). But, this isn't worth a Nobel Peace Prize.

I HATE Carter. His work on the Israel/Egypt peace accord was the most deserving of the award in my lifetime. Though Sadat & Begin had worked most of the treaty out well before Carter's intervention, Carter "closed the sale". Negotiations only count if someone can get both parties to agree. Carter did.

After 4 bloody wars in ~25 years, they've been at peace for over 30 years since the treaty he worked out. Egypt & Israel even work together with problems with Hamas. But, Carter didn't get it.

The "luster" of that award was tainted by the fact that terrorists like Begin ... & especially Arafat ... received the award.

IPCC wasn't peer-reviewed. It wasn't even edited by scientists: it was edited, and the final edit approved, by bureaucrats. Indeed not all of the source research is available - it's not eligible for peer-review by any reputable journal for that reason.

The main problem with climate science is that it struggles mightily to predict the past. There are no time scales where the models appear to do well in predicting the future, from long periods right down to the one-year period, where broad overall trend predictions appear to finally get better than a dart-toss.

So to turn things around... are there any Bush voters that still think they made the right call 7 years ago? Using the cliched litmus test of "Are you better off than you were?", do any Bush voters have the slightest doubt that they voted for the right man? I know it's tempting to simply dodge the question Coulter style, and instead heap more criticism on Gore... but I'm genuinely curious to hear how Bush has left America stronger than it was 7 years ago.

your statement assumes that we are somehow weaker after 7 years of GW. how are we weaker? if by "weakness" you mean international opinion of the US then I have no problem. I don't give a fuck what other countries think of us, their opinion is rarely based in reality anyway. in fact, I'd prefer other countries dislike us then we can actually do and act in the ways they perceive. Rep. hypocrites are always a hot item here so I assume Tipper G.'s censorship of the music industry, as hypothetical first lady, would have drawn similar derision. And the goracle living a lavish anti-green lifestyle while expecting us peons to reduce reuse recycle and live in a 10 by 10 cardboard box while he pays off his excesses with carbon offsets is acceptable. it's pretty convenient that the payments for his carbon offsets go to a company that, shockingly, he owns. curious. even GW is greener than the goracle, but heaven forbid that kind of story draws any attention away from the goracle and his emmys and nobel peace prizes

If you judge strength (ie weakness) by comparison of the US economy to the economies of its major trading partner ( US $ vs. Canadian $ 5yr chart) , the US is crawling around on all fours in a ditch looking for its teeth. That's on W's watch.

I can certainly understand why someone would be a social/fiscal/cultural conservative, but at this point, I can't imagine anyone saying they think W and the lads have done a good job, except as a provocation to an argument.

He has lived up to his destiny as an embarassment the US will need generations to live down. The best that can be said of him is that he occasionally managed to extricate himself from problems caused by his administration's own incompetence.

well, that's subjective. I don't agree with everything GW has done, but to imply everything he has done is a "bad job" is just as disingenuous.

Now that's a loaded statement. Who prophesied that he would have a "destiny of embarassment(sic) the US would need generations to live down"? the state run CBC?

if that's truly what you believe as "the best that can be said of him" then your state run media has sadly misinformed you.

Worse than that was it's fraudulent claim at legitimacy by including the names of every scientist it ever touched as endorsing it's conclusions. Many disagreed.

Exchange rates are not a sound measure of relative economic strength. Having said that, I don't disagree that the US economy is weaker.

As a net importer of goods (trade deficit 818 Billion $ last year), your weak dollar lowers your standard of living by decreasing your buying power. While it is true that there are other indicators of relative economic strength, comparisons with your trading partners do indicate the strengths of the economies.

Perhaps it's just all part of the Bush administration's master plan to increase exports?

British Pound vs. US Dollar

EURO vs. US Dollar

Chinese Yuan vs. US Dollar

Japanese Yen vs. US Dollar

Oddly these disparate countries all have a state-owned TV station too. Is it possible that the absence of one is what is sending your economy into the shitter? I think it's more likely caused by the drunk fratboys driving the bus.

On the bright side, you're holding your own against the Mexican peso and the Pakistani Rupee. Just.

It depends on your perspective ...

The middle class is worse off.
Bush's pals, Halliburton, the UAE, et. al., are better off.

One thing that really worries me is that the debt is HUGE.
And, I can't think of a thing we really got for it ....

One thing: Fortune 500 Billionaires?

If the wingnuts give them just one more tax break, I'm sure it will finally trickle down to the middle class!

And, according to Cheney, Reagan proved that the deficit (closing in on $10 trillion) doesn't matter.

Especially if it's $10 trillion US...

If the US$ continues to free fall, Cheney may be proven right.

After all, $10 trillion isn't such a big number if it's in yen or pesos.

Now, watch this drive...

Perhaps it's just all part of the Bush administration's master plan to increase exports?

You jest, but having our currency fall through the floor when we crashed out of the ERM in '92 was the best thing that ever happened to the UK economy.

If you judge strength (ie weakness) by comparison of the US economy to the economies of its major trading partner ( US $ vs. Canadian $ 5yr chart) , the US is crawling around on all fours in a ditch looking for its teeth. That's on W's watch.

As said, currency ratios and economic strength are only loosely coupled, usually with a long lag. It's made even worse when the currency is being subtly manipulated as I think the US dollar is being manipulated: I think some of the fall is a result of "talking down" in order to make exports cheaper and cool import demand.

(example: European policymakers are NOT smug about the euro's climb against the dollar: they're actually in a panic over it. Canada's economy is so tightly bound to the US that this is less of a problem: even if the currency issue hurts Canada, the dominant fact will be that anything that helps the US economy will help Canada too)

I miss the halcyon days of the mid-1970's when the scientific community was warning about the impending return of the ice-age.

Or the 1980's when El Nino was causing earthquakes. Or whatever is was.

are there any Bush voters that still think they made the right call 7 years ago? Using the cliched litmus test of "Are you better off than you were?", do any Bush voters have the slightest doubt that they voted for the right man? but I'm genuinely curious to hear how Bush has left America stronger than it was 7 years ago.

I don't think there's much question that Bush has been a big step backward. It's just hard to say that Gore would have done better. Different yes, but better? We'd trade one set of problems for another.

Part of the fault lies with the Democrats for putting up such abysmal candidates. And it's happening again: instead of putting up the best candidates they're putting up the worst and least experienced, giving the Republicans the best chance of winning (though I think Republican chances are about zero now: too much pandering to the right).

If the wingnuts give them just one more tax break, I'm sure it will finally trickle down to the middle class!

As shocking as it may seem, the "rich", however you define it, pay a lot more in taxes than the middle class, individually. As a group they may pay less because they are far fewer of them, but they pay taxes at a much higher rate than the middle class, and a far greater portion of tax revenues than their numbers suggest. And the poor don't have to pay at all.

The problematic trend in my opinion is not in individual income taxes but rather in the effective corporate tax rates. Lowering the effective rate does make export-oriented companies more competitive globally, but it's not clear that shifting the tax burden further towards individual taxpayers - and that means shifting towards the burden towards the middle class - is overall a good thing.

And amazingly enough the US economy has been doing pretty well. In Bush's first two years the economy did spectacularly better than I expected - no real fallout from the bubble burst. I'm not sure who deserves credit but clearly things went much better than one would have expected.

Right now I'm seeing the first real warning signs on the economy in a long time - the credit markets may have been in a bubble that burst. We'll see, but up to this point the hard reality is that the economy has done pretty well.

Al Gore == bloodthirsty killer

No risky of the lefties rewarding Tookie now - Nobel prizes can only be awarded to the living (that's the reason Rosaline Franklin was not even nominated for a Nobel prize for the discovery of the structure of DNA).
