Most people who've been to college can think of people who were bright but got hooked onto drugs and lost it all.

An extreme example might be Brian Josephson, who won the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics for work he did as a grad student in 1962 at age 22. He has done little since then and I've heard rumors he got messed up in drugs in the 60's and that's what ended his useful output.
