I was wondering the same thing. To graduate in GCSE's you had to take at least 2 foreign languages, 3 were preferable, and French was a must. I guess you could take one but it was so useless when everyone else was chopping it up in German, French and Latin and you couldn't even vibe proper in English.

I lived for 4 years in Italy and had to take bloody Portuguese as a foreign language, then moved to Japan for quite a few months where I learned how to read backwards.

In the States however nobody speaks foreign languages and when they do they're too clinical and often miss the humor and certain flavor that separates speakers of different regions. I guess it's what you'd call "text book" conversation.
