King just reminded me:

I am now officially out of the Jeopardy! contestant pool.

Seriously.

I took the test online (50 Questions) in February or March of '06. Then I heard nothing for months. Until I got the attached e-mail in the middle of September, telling me to report to the Waldorf Astoria for another set of tests.

The first test was another set of 50 questions, just straight up answers, no "Who is Cleetus Van Damme." Then they split the group of 24 into threes and had a mock game, complete with buzzers and the monitors etc. Finally there was the "personality test," basically a rather offbeat interview by the show's producers.

Anyway, since we all passed the first test we were all in the contestant pool. Unfortunately, there were about 4,000 people in the pool and only 450 slots available in any given year. At the end of a year, they start with a whole new pool.

I've actually heard of people who went through five or six pools before getting on the show.

So, it's been a year and I'm now officially out of the pool. If I see an online test come up again I'll definitely take it. I've always wanted to be on that show.

Meantime, there's always

damn, that's fucked up. I can understand them expecting for you to pay for travel expenses to the audition at the Waldorf in NYC because that's your local try out site, but even if you make it to the show they want you to take care of and pay for all the accommodations and arrangements in LA too. cheap bastards. throw a brainiac a night's lodging, pricks. and fuck you trebek!

I read in Ken Jennings' book that they have deals with a hotel and an airline. I wouldn't have minded. I doubt I would have been on anywhere near as long as Jennings so It wouldn't have been that much out of pocket. Besides, I haven't been to California in 14 years, so I would have enjoyed seeing LA.

If I had to stay in the Waldorf=Astoria it would be here-

From my understanding I think they have a sort of "personality test" for the Price is right as well....Last time I was in LA they get contestants randomly by giving away tickets in front of grauman's Chinese (Hollywood) and when they get “enough” to fill the set off to Burbank…and they see who’s got energy & enthusiasm and who doesn’t…..since the questions/games don’t require a high intellect…as long as you stand out and are not a serial killer…you maybe the lucky person……to win a brand new car!

I've had a few friends on Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and went to see Price is Right.

Jeopardy does favor people who live in Southern California; all five episodes for the week are filmed on one day and supposedly filmed in real time (two minute breaks for commercials in between segments) six months before air date. Preference is given to the people from out of state given they have days in between filming, so if it nears a weekend or the champion is from So Cal they switch it around and have the California people go home and come back the next week. Another way for them to save money on a hotel.

Price is Right gives preferences to large groups; they make promises to all the college in Southern California and other large groups that if they bring 30-40 people one of them will be *guaranteed* to be called. The crowd's 200-300 people, so four or five of the eight or nine contestants called up to play are from groups and the rest are from people who get random tickets to fill the holes in the audience. Its a simple: they stop you before you go into the studio, have you smile and say your name and where you're from, and have all the large groups with prior accommodations enter in waves. Thats all they need to decide.

I'm going to be on Jeopardy someday and whomp some ass.

I suppose you would find reading a waste of time. I'll see if I can find you the comic book edition.

I love reading. I'm just surprised you would read a book about Ken Jennings. He's just a brainy nerd who did well on a game show.
