No-one in the know buys individual fares on the tube. For future reference, what you wanted was a travelcard. Zones 1 & 2 cover most places a tourist would want to go in London. You could have had a day of unlimited travelling in those areas for about $13 or about $10 after 9:30AM.

(Not that I'm disputing that UK prices are generally outrageous.)
