There just is NOT enough treatment availability in this country, period. If you are not wealthy, it is very hard to get the type of treatment someone such as this chick Sophia requires. Even if you have health insurance, most plans only cover the bare minimum of treatment, if you want to do it right, you have to pay out of your own pocket. Someone who is already spending every dime to stay high and maintain is fucked...

But here again, life is just a crapshoot, some are lucky (like me) and some are not. And YES, in the context of life in general, and within this subject in particular, I AM very lucky, even though I was fucked at birth physically. I have been in pain since I was a baby, I have had general anesthesia dozens of times, and have been on (and off, and on...and on...and off...) the "big guns" of pain medications all my life. And of course, I drink, and enjoy other things from time to time....and I have never really had any problem getting off and staying off any of it when I absolutely needed to. Some would term this functional addiction, or pseudo-addiction. I dont, I know whaqt my situation is and if I had to or wanted to I could do without any chemicals forever. But that's because, since I was a little kid, I never could bullshit myself, I always had reality facing me in the face every day. The linchpin of addiction is twofold: ESCAPE reality (or alter it in the brain), AND bullshitting oneself into thinking any number of falsehoods. What chemicals I do now simply are what I WANT to do, because I can and because, having been lucky to survive this long and being in pain all the time, I'd be fucking nuts NOT to be on something most of the time.

Life is just not fair...Sophia needs about 6 months of solitude in a log cabin in Vermont...

Christian, you know I love you, but damn you are always so negative! Of course I have no idea what Sophia is up to at the moment and if she's clean or not. But I know sober people with insane stories who were addicts into their 30s, 40s, 50s... It's never too late. And yes I know she has a daughter, and for that I'm praying for her even harder (well I don't exactly pray, but you get my jist). You don't do drugs, I don't even think you drink. You have NO idea what it's like to be Sophia. Or any of the other 20 girls you just mentioned. Does it make their behavior justifiable? Of course not. I'm just trying to see them as human beings, not as objects of ridicule. All I said is that I'm hoping Sophia can get sober and get her life together. What exactly is wrong with that?

Like CXXX, I don't do drugs. I rarely drink - and, when I do its almost always under social pressure - I don't enjoy it.

So, yes, I have no idea what its like to be Sophia or any drug addict.

But, I won't let ANYONE off the hook with "its a disease" when the drugs in question are ILLEGAL. Alcohol gets a "pass" with me since our society all but FORCES people to drink, lauds more than a bit of bawdy drunkenness and thus people susceptible to alcoholism are coerced into partaking in this drug.

But, the drugs that have impacted Sophia, Cytherea, et. al., are outright BANNED. There are reasons society doesn't allow that path - in part to save people so pre-wired from succumbing to said "diseases". Sophia and her ilk CHOSE to disregard that and thus CHOSE their fate/condition.

I feel badly for their state of mind that led to the choice, I mourn the waste they've made of their potential and lives, but THEY MADE THE CHOICE TO BE ADDICTS.

A person with epilepsy doesn't choose to have a seizure. A person with schizophrenia doesn't choose to hear voices. A person with Alzheimer's doesn't choose to not to recognize his/her closest family members.

I'm bi-polar. I can't choose to control my mood swing on my own. It takes prescription drugs to control them. Sometimes they stop working, my mood swings resume and I end up back in the hospital. That is very sad, and not my fault. But, if I choose not to take them, then I AM responsible for my mood swings. I would have made the choice to be sick. And, then it isn't sad. It's pathetic and wrong.

If a person is struggling with life, for whatever reason, there are many choices s/he has. If s/he elects to address this problem with ILLEGAL drugs, it is an unwise, unfortunate decision. But, it was his/her CHOICE not an outcome of an ILLNESS.


You want to tell me that there is a mental illness underneath the addiction to meth/coke/heroin, and I'll buy that. I'll sympathize with it. I'll help with that. I listen to this in group therapy everyday, and I'm very supportive.

But, I cannot sympathize with the addiction itself.

WE KNEW that Sophia would get addicted if she did that shit. SHE KNEW that she would get addicted if she did that shit. It is the reason the substances are BANNED. Children are taught this everyday. And, still, with all the resources we expend to education and enforcement, idiots choose to do illicit addictive drugs and augment the damage to our society.

I see it more as Treason than Disease.

I cannot find empathy for a person who injects themselves with anthrax OR heroin and tells me that now they have somehow come down with a disease.

I caught the fucker, but the trap only got the vermin by the paw, so when I came home that night, it had been suffering for hours (Aria said she heard the rat trap go off in the afternoon, but she wasn't about to check it). It was lying there, eyes closed, barely breathing. Chris had to come over and smash it's head in for me so it would die quickly and not lie in the trash can in pain. I was almost in tears, I felt so terrible. I even had a thought flash through my head of taking it in and nursing it back to heath, and then releasing it somewhere else. Then I thought: it's a fucking diseased rat. (shudder)

Still, I felt like a murder. I hope it's up in rat heaven, eating blocks of cheese without a trap in sight. And I hope Sophia gets sober and happy. That's all.

Written very beautifully Holly, I hate people who haven't been there and talk like they know. Drugs are the hardest things in the world to get off of, I talk from experience and not textbook like others do. Meetings do help, it can NOT be done alone, I dont care what anyone says lately about me, I know who I am and what I've been doing lately to improve myself and my life and I have exceeded beyond my expectations. So please dont talk about people with hardcore drug habits, especially stuff like Heroin and Benzo's, they are the worst of the worst to come off of and YES it can be done, you have to want this, truly want it and all the cliches are true, people, places and things, stay busy, when your antsy, call someone or go stick your ass in a meeting and stay there all day long till you vent and vent and lose the urge to use.
