So as to give them a grace period in which to dispose of any EA branded stock of said director's titles which will shortly be appearing under another studio label? Although I would imagine such a contingency would be written into any contracts or agreements.

The other big issue would be loss of projected income...if 5-6 of EA's current roster were to just up and leave tomorrow, then there would have to be some serious recalculations made as well as some serious recruiting too.

Last but not least, giving some form of advanced notice is what is known as 'courtesy'.
