It seems we've got us some guitar players here on XPT. I thought I'd start a thread honoring some of my biggest influences, so here we go: John McLaughlin and Shakti performing La Danse du Bonheur

Johnny Winter is my favorite blues guitarist of all time. Hope to see him live one last time before his health catches up with him. Johnny performing Sweet Papa John live in Toronto circa 1984

Roy Buchanan is another great blues artist who died too soon. Very underappreciated player; almost joined the Stones in the late 60's. When A Guitar Plays the Blues

Zappa's playing was as twisted as his sense of humor, but the man had such a unique style. Cosmic Debris (textbook Zappa solo)

Can't mention Zappa without thinking of Steve Vai. This one doesn't feature any playing, but it's quite a story. Steve Vai talks about his audition with Frank Zappa

Al DiMeola was the first to open my ears beyond blues and rock. Friday Night in San Francisco is probably my fav guitar album of all times. DiMeola and John McLaughlin: Tales From the Black Forest live

You guys have named some good players. I'm a fan of Al Demiola; I saw him with Return to Forever in 1975 (Fox Theatre Atlanta) and he was excellent. Robin Trower is a fave of mine as well, at least his work back on "Bridge of Sighs". And we cannot leave out Stevie Ray - I still weep for his untimely death. Of course, the best non-jazz/blues player ever to pick up the instrument is Steve Howe, from Yes. He's not as good as he once was but back in the day (the 70's), he could blow anyone away. I have no opinion on shredders like Vai; I haven't heard enough of their work to have a favorite. I do like that Mattrach guy on YouTube; if you havern't seen his work, check this out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=owAj5LiXG5wHe rocks and looks so funny while tearing off those licks.

I guess I will represent metal, ha ha. For me, right now its Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. Just listen to that sick solo. I also like Stevie Ray Vaughn. That guy put so much feeling into his playing. I know he's not metal, but still one of my favs. Tony Iommi, just for creating a new genre of playing. He is the father of heavy metal. The hardest thing for me to play is Meshuggah. Damn complex polyrhythmic patterns. 10/16,10/16,10/16/,4/16,10/16,10/16, 8/16, 36/16 rhythms are hard to follow when the drums and bass are playing 4/4 time then 5/4. Follow along if you can. Meshuggah

This is one I used to have on an old white label bootleg in grade ten. It's a very coked and drunk Stevie Ray playing the El Mocombo in Toronto. Lenny

Many great players already mentioned, and "Johnny" McLaughlin is my all-time favorite - so much good music out of that guy it's insane. I remember seeing Shakti live in Central Park in '76 (I think) - I was blown away. Saw him at least a couple dozen times since then in many different contexts, and all have been great. The guy is a monster player.
Runners-up for me include Scott Henderson (blues, rock, fusion maniac - unbelievable chops), Eric Johnson (the "Texas Tornado"), and many others.

I used to love the album Love Devotion and Surrender. I believe this song was the entire second side of the album. Mclaughlin playing live with Carlos Santana

This thread is entirely too long not to have Mark Knopfler mentioned in it. There are about 8000 versions of this solo on YouTube and they're all damn good. There are also about 4000 versions of this solo that are pretty good too. I think I love this thread too much

All some very fine players. I think I'm going to have to pull my axe outta the closet this weekend and do some noodling. I was on the floor at Clapton's 25th anniversary tour in '87. Anticipating the concert was exciting enough, but when I got there they announced Knopfler was his backup guitarist I almost lost my mind.

Extrapolation is a great album. So is McLaughlin's "acid" album Devotion
McLaughlin got me interested in jazz, and I still have Wes Montgomery's Smokin' at the Half Note on vinyl - incredible record.
Start naming jazz players and you'll get me going for sure... Jim Hall Pat Metheny Pat Martino (maybe my all-time favorite "straight" jazz player) Bill Frissell Joe Pass (The duo albums he did with Ella Fitzgerald are some of the most sublime jazz ever recorded, IMHO)
...and those are just off the top of my head
Lenny Breaux was great, too - died tragically early

Yep. That and Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery are at the top. Another favorite of mine is Wes Montgomery Trio - A New Dynamic Sound from 1959. Its a guitar-organ-drums trio with some fine, melodic, soloing.

Nobody's mentioned Eddie Van Halen or Alan Holdsworth yet! Both are tops in their genres.
Van Halen revolutionized rock guitar playing (followed close behind by the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, et al).
Holdsworth, with his fusion-like sound and incredible, flowing lines carved out his own niche in the avant-rock/jazz world.
A couple lesser-known jazz players that I consider significant...
Cal Collins - a straight-ahead West-coast player - amazing chops. Herb Ellis - straight-ahead player in the Joe Pass mold. Made great recordings with Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson among countless other luminaries.
And then of course, there's Mike Stern - brought to greater prominence by Miles Davis when he made his early-eighties comeback, Stern plays an incredible mixture of bebob and rock that sounds totally unique.
So many great players it's hard to mention them all, but we've made a great start
I saw Mark Knopfler with Dire Straits in a small club in Atlanta a few months after their first album started hitting it big - what an amazing musician. And Stevie Ray Vaughan needs no introduction. "Texas Flood" remains one of my favorite albums of ANY genre

James Hetfield. Say what you will about Metallica now, but they were the most influential metal band of the 80's. Every thrash band emulated his rhythm style from the palm muting to riff writing. Just listen to the riffs and arrangement. Metallica - Blackened
Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist isn't shabby either.
