So I go to the local post office today to send a few things out I sold on eBay. One package is a little over three pounds and shouldn't cost more than $13 to send from California to Florida. I get up there and the clerk says it will be $28 for Priority mail...$2 more than even sending it by Express! It already has the priority mail stickers and everything filled out. I ask what the deal is; he says if one end is close to 18 inches it now gets some weird ass surcharge "for plane space and gas" (first I've heard of this). Fucking great, I decide to quickly re-box it before they close today and pay $3 for a roll of tape and $3.19 for a box 15 inches in length, well under the suggestion by him to make sure its less than 17 inches and still less than the $15 difference. After spending an extra $6, ten minutes re-boxing and taping right before they close, I bring it back up there and the fucker asks for $27?!? WHAT THE FUCK? The guy doesn't even know his own post office policies? He tells me its all the machine that does it...then why the fuck did he tell me to make sure one side was less than 17 inches? I hate to sound like a big fucking racist (which I can be)...but did I mention the clerk and everyone else working in there was black? Was this some sort of payback for 300 years of slavery or something? Making sure I get fucked for twice what it should cost to mail a fucking box that wasn't even that big? I calculated the same postage on the internet with their numbers and zips and it was only $13.65 I was so pissed I just told him to send it express and take the hit; $26 later and filling out a fucking address label for a third time. I was so pissed I went and bought a fucking pack of cigarettes for the first time in nine months. What shit fucking service and useless assholes there. The office of Postmaster General has always been given as a sinecure to a top party boss, who hands out top jobs in the various states as a reward to loyal lieutenants, who in turn dispense jobs to loyal party workers. The Main Post Office in New York is named the James A. Farley Post Office. Farley was the Democratic National Committee Chairman who helped get FDR elected in 1932. ANd, following tradition, he proceeded to hand out jobs to party regulars. There were some civil service and other reforms made in the wake of Watergate, but, though the power of the Postmaster General to dispense patronage has been greatly weakend, it is still the single greatest source of patronage in the Federal Government. So relax. In two years, there'll be a whole new crew of cronies in there.

You will usually get good service, you can buy the right shipping supplies, make photocopies, there are shorter waiting lines and you can compare prices with other shippers right there. Usually USPS is significantly cheaper than any of the courier services... but not always. It's good that USPS is there, but you really don't have to go to any of their branches to take advantage of their services. I dread going to the post office because of the waiting lines. I am not racist, but I have also noticed that it's mostly black people who seem to work at the post offices in LA. I don't envy them. I actually worked at a post office as a temp and lasted only a couple of weeks because it was mind-numbing and I couldn't deal with getting up at 4:30am. There are novels about postal workers, and Charles Buchowski worked at post offices on and off. Once again, I'd rather talk for hours about something lame like post offices than doing my homework...
