Gallipoli (One of Mel Gibson's first starring roles)

The Enemy Below

The Longest Day

Saving Private Ryan

Hamburger Hill

Porkchop Hill

Das Boot ("The Boat) * Probably the best *

Apocalypse Now Redux

Gettysburg

Cold Mountain

Who agrees/disagrees???

Gallipoli, Hamburger Hill, Das Boot, Apocalypse Now AND Redux for sure.

How about?:

The Big Red One (1980, Sam Fuller!)
Paths of Glory (Kubrick)
The Deer Hunter
Al Quiet on the Western Front (1930 original)
Three Kings
Birdy (only partially a "war movie")
Johnny Got His Gun (ditto)

I could do without Gettysburg and Spielberg. Cold Mountain can suck my big red one, DB.

I never finished Das Boot. I've tried but a 4 hour movie is too long for me.

Letters From Iwo Jima
Platoon
We Were Soldiers
Full Metal Jacket
Bridge On The River Kwai
Caine Mutiny

Not a movie, per se, but anyone who has seen the "Band of Brothers" series and didn't then feel the urge to visit their grandfather's gravesite and join the Airborne needs to pack up and move to Russia.

Definitely yes on the Dozen. Also Stalag 17. Both better than The Great Escape IMHO.

I would agree with The Longest Day, Apocalypse Now, and Saving Private Ryan. Depending on how strict your interpretation of a "war movie" is I would add the following.

All Quiet on the Western Front
The Caine Mutiny
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Judgment at Nuremberg
Lawrence of Arabia
Patton
The Sand Pebbles

This one's in there with the bloated epics like Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far (zzzzz...) and The Green Berets.

Agreed, Band of Brothers is awesome, but not a movie....All the other ones mentioned here have a place in my heart too. Memphis Belle was a close call for me, if someone other than Matthew Modine had been the captain I might have chose it too. But the movie accurately portrayed the Air War over Germany during World War II ... Both sides, American and German showed melon-size balls in what they did. Flying a B-17, straight and level on bomb runs into 88mm Flak and with ME-109 and FW-190 fighters spitting 20mm canon shells barreling in took nerves of steel, while at the same time, charging into a formation of B-17s like the German fighters did, after the B-17s adopted Curtis Lemay's "Box" tactics, with each boat bristling with machine guns, was literally flying into a virtual hot lead festival.

A Bridge Too Far, telling the tragic story of the Arnhem campaign is good too but with too much bullshit mixed in...remember the James Caan character??? "Would you look at him please sir....right NOW....or I will Blow YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF."

Of course I once overeached myself too after a pretty heady deal back in 2000...I ordered in for pussy and asked for 3 (THREE) top notch whores. I took the first one, the hottest of the three and spent an hour and change banging her in my wheelchair over a desk...the second one I only titty fucked because I was pooped and I was drinking heavily as well. By the time I called the third one in, I poured her a glass of wine, popped another beer for myself, and fell asleep. I went a BIMBO too far....

I definately disagree. Gallipoli, Das Boot and Gettysburg maybe, but Saving Private Ryan, Cold Mountain? Come to think of it, Das Boot alone deserves to be on that top 10 list. All you people need to be given the gas face.

It really depends on how wide/narrow your scope is with regards to what is/isn't a 'war movie'.

'Where Eagles Dare' is a favourite of mine...but then, so are the 'Ilsa' movies as well.

Why don't you like Apocalypse Now Mr Loopnode?

I'd add Cross of Iron even though it kind of seems like a parody of itself nowadays...

but Come and see has got to be in the top three of all time.

A war movie of sorts, yet in a different vein, "Mr. Roberts" was a classic. Some serious acting moxie in that one, Henry Fonda, James Cagney, and Jack Lemmon among others.

Loopnode is clearly on the crack cocaine.

I almost put Tora! Tora! Tora! there, too bad Kurosawa dropped out on it. Midway would have been great if they had stuck to the actual battle (which was technically very accurate) but Hollywood had to stuff the contrived Charlton Hesston and his pussywhipped son plotline into it and turded it up.

Patton remains one of my favorite movies ever made and probably ranks up there as the best war movie in my opinion. George C. Scott's performance is the best every captured on celluloid as Patton; it makes me wish there were hard ass mother fuckers like Patton still out there.

Das Boot is *so* dated with those special effects and miniature work; I could never get into it given the goofy look of some of the sfx shots.

No one mentioned Glory at all? One of the better war movies ever made in my opinion, and certainly the best Civil War movie ever done given its symbolism and story.

Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Hamburger Hill are all at the top of my list too.

Come and See is undoubtedly a fucking mind-blowing masterpiece. From the looks of things, three people here have seen it. That's really a "war film." I think The Thin Red Line is a damn good film too, but more in line with Apocalypse, Deer Hunter, etc. as films about other themes set in "war time."

I don't know exactly what I would throw off my list but I would have to find some kind of way to make room for Henry V (Olivier version, though Mr. Thompson's version was good too).

Uh, where's Platoon? And Apocalpyse Redux is horribly bloated compared to the shorter version(s), masterpieces all. None of the extra footage adds a GD thing to the movie. Francis, get thine ego under control.

Full metal jacket all the way!!!!!!!!!!
I hear its the most accurate portrayal on how it was really was on vietnam...

Apocalypse Now, i think it was to much of a Disney show...Vitorio Storaro was over the top if you ask me...best thing of that movie was the script and Robert Duvall

what about DEERHUNTER...scene with Deniro and Walken (when they are POW)...probably one of my favorite scenes in movie history...DeNiro at his best only rivaled by his Rupert Pupkin performance

Nobody has talked about platoon...fuck that shit...

Jacob's Ladder...YES!!!!!!!

Not a "Top Ten," but a personal favorite: To Hell And Back.

Audie Murphy plays himself in the story of how he became America's most decorated soldier ever.

This was a staple on Chanel 7's 4:00 Movie and I must have seen it a dozen times while home sick from school.

You mean the "4:30 Movie"! That shit used to keep me off the streets for sure.

The great opening with the camerman is here:

I always remember seeing Jesus Week with "King of Kings," and all the other Bible films like "Samson and Delilah." I even remember seeing "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia," edited-for-tv into nonsensicality.

Damn, Charlie. That took me back.

That's right, it was the 4:30 movie. It's been close to 30 years.

You know what else was good? The Martial Arts movies on Channel 5 on Saturday Afternoons. Before 5 became FOX. Those Kicked Ass.

Yeah, I love that spinning cameraman vid.

The programming was great on WNEW-Metromedia Channel 5 during the 70s, particularly on weekends. I think the kung-fu movies started after the kids show "Wonderama" with Bob McAllister. They played a lot of stuff that isn't on DVD today. "Chiller Theater" on Channel 11 was pretty cool too. Great opener:

Watch 'em all in a lump over a three-day weekend, and you'll understand Grant's "War is Hell" statement, and perhaps, not so be gung-ho when voting for draft-dodging fear-mongering Republican candidates who believe that our national security is enhanced by invading an "attractive" Middle-East country...

Democrat presidents waltzed us into each and every one of the wars/conflicts described in all four films.

What's also interesting is that the first three are better anti-war films than right-out-of-the-box anti-war "message films" like the outrageously overrated M*A*S*H (and its vile t.v. spawn) and the godawful Catch 22. I think Pvt. Ryan is just a big rich turd. Sometimes I can't tell where that movie ends and the WWII Playstation games begin.

I'll take the THE FIGHTING 69TH any day!

Actually Gunk, William T. Sherman uttered that observation, during the Battle of Bald Beaver Creek, somehwere in Kentucky, after witnessing a soldier shoot two other dudes ahead of him in line to use the (at-the-time) very innovative porta-potties the Union army was in the process of perfecting. The shooter suffered from explosive diarrhea brought on either by dysentary or Opium withdrawal. He was shown mercy and only given 11 years Roxk chopping in leavenworth.

FYI -- Bald Beaver Creek got its name not because the local beaver population had very little fur, but the chicks who went swimming/bathing in the creek witnessed their pubes falling off and floating away .... needless to say this place made Porn History for, as the Civil War introduced en masse the Camera, this battle spawned the first edition of "Barely Legal" porn pictures.

Meh. I called Dirty Dozen on page one.

Another good, but not great, movie in the same vein is Kelley's heroes. Sutherland cracks me up in that one.

Here are a couple of blasts from the past. The Blue Max. Peppard was great. Does anyone remember an excellent TV mini-series from the 70s, titled Once An Eagle?

I don't remember Once an Eagle, but I do remember The Blue Max. Peppard is a WW I German ace, and a rival to Richtoffen and Boelke. Good Stuff.
