HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A local woman arrested for animal neglect last year is in jail for keeping another pet.
On Thursday, Washington County Circuit Judge Steven Price sentenced Miriam Elaine Sakewitz to three days in jail because police said she violated her probation by keeping a rabbit in her home.
She has been ordered not to go within 100 feet of a rabbit after her release.
In October, police in Hillsboro found that Sakewitz had more than 250 rabbits in her home, including about 100 dead ones in freezers and refrigerators.
Then in January, police said, the 44-year-old woman broke into the facility where they were holding the rabbits and took most of them.
Police found her a few days later in Chehalis, Wash., with eight live rabbits and two dead ones in her car. More than 130 rabbits were recovered at a nearby horse farm.
In April, Sakewitz entered no contest pleas to misdemeanor charges of animal neglect, criminal mischief and tampering with evidence. She was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
