Come on Moxie, you can make a better argument than this.
It's more than just the hypocrisy (although that's a big part of it too). The GOP has a base of support amongst the social elite (ie "Old Money") but that won't give them a majority.
Their post-1984 strategy has been to co-opt idiot working class families through fear-mongering that homosexual flag burners will rape their children, force them to have abortions and take their guns away. To their credit, the stratgey has been wildly successful.
In order to implement the strategy, the GOP needed the assistance of the religious right, because middle-American families strongly identify through their church organizations. Abortion has been the major lever in getting the religious groups on side, demonizing homosexuality is the other.
The fact that every week a different Republican law maker is found out to be a closeted homosexual, or worse, a child predator, pulls back the curtain on the whole tissue of lies that they claim as their moral high ground.
The point is not that Democrats can't also be gay, it's that Democrats don't make promotion of an anti-gay agenda a litmus test for party loyalty.
I would expect to find some 'closeted' Jews on the roster of an elite country club in the 1930s, I would be stunned to find them in the Gestapo.
