Clarence Thomas hasn't spoken from the bench since February 2006
McClatchy Newspapers analyzed the transcripts of oral arguments at the Supreme Court to see how many words each of the nine justices used during hearings this year.
They found that Stephen Breyer said 34,937 words, while Antonin Scalia said 30,087. Together, these two jurists accounted for 42% of the high court's verbiage, according to our calculations.
Meanwhile, Clarence Thomas stayed mum. He hasn't spoken from the bench since February 22, 2006, according to McClatchy. The newspaper group says Thomas has uttered just 281 words during 218 hours of oral arguments since October 2004.
With a $200,000 annual salary, that's about $1,800 a word.
