Quote: Seriously. I'm thinking about going there for a while. I'm not sure why. It's the worst place on Earth, but I've been possessed with Haitian history for the past week especially François Duvalier, Jean Price Mars, Dessalines and Henri Christophe.
I share the dream.
Have you read Herbert Gold's THE BEST NIGHTMARE ON EARTH? If not, I highly recommend it. You might be better off in the D.R., really. It's as corrupt and dirty, and almost as perverse. There's just less chance you'll get machine-gunned or have your head macheted in half at high noon outside the train station. The situation there is of course at least ten times worse than when Gold wrote his book.
I always wanted to go to Gonave, the island off the coast that named a white king who happened to come ashore with the navy one day.
Graham Greene's THE COMEDIANS captures the maniacal hey-day of the Tontons Macoutes death squad.
