Seriously. I'm thinking about going there for a while. I'm not sure why. It's the worst place on Earth, but I've been possessed with Haitian history for the past week especially François Duvalier, Jean Price Mars, Dessalines and Henri Christophe.

A couple of days ago I started searching for people that had graduated from St Louis de Gonzague (one of the best schools in Port-au-Prince) and started e-mailing them asking them about the school and what kind of books they had in the library, what the curriculum is like etc. I'm also considering writing some of the staff and hopefully getting some letter communication going; so if any of you folks know peeps in Haiti, give me a holla!
btw Travieso. Out of all the people I've sold dolls to I've never once sold to a Haitian.

Have you read Herbert Gold's THE BEST NIGHTMARE ON EARTH? If not, I highly recommend it. You might be better off in the D.R., really. It's as corrupt and dirty, and almost as perverse. There's just less chance you'll get machine-gunned or have your head macheted in half at high noon outside the train station. The situation there is of course at least ten times worse than when Gold wrote his book.
I always wanted to go to Gonave, the island off the coast that named a white king who happened to come ashore with the navy one day.
Graham Greene's THE COMEDIANS captures the maniacal hey-day of the Tontons Macoutes death squad.
Or just go to Cuba. Not to be missed.

Charlie@FOXmagazine I haven't read that book but I will check for it. The book that first got me interested in Haiti was William Seabrook's The Magic Island. I actually read it as a kid and somehow it resurfaced when I was reading about Jean Price Mars. Soopergrizz: I've actually been to Cuba. I thought it was fantastic, but not as great as Columbia. I actually know a guy from Haiti but he doesn't like to talk about it. Maybe his parents were slaughtered or something.

If you want to buy cheap Haitian art - take a trip to the Dominican Republic - most of the trinkets etc. on sale there are manufactured in Haiti.
The last time I was in the DR was a year or two ago and I bought two paintings which look to be in the Haitian style.
Proximity to Haitian art notwithstanding, Cuba is a way better place to visit than the DR (if you can get around the boycott). You can get a cheap package trip from Vancouver (or Toronto) and the Cuban immigration office doesn't stamp your passport.

Thanks man. Do you know if the Creole they speak in the Dominican Republic is similar to Haitian creole? Also do the two governments have commissaries with one another?

Yeah, I know the situation there isn't good, but I'm sure it's not all bad. For example Pétionville and Labadee, although I wasn't going here for vacation or fucking whores. Mostly I was interested in going to Port-au-Prince, Delmas and Carrefour.

I knew a nurses aide who came from Haiti, he had saved enough to build a house in the country there, i remember asking him if it was safe and i think he said that it was kinda safe in the country but not in the cities. Dude don't make the trip just because i chided you about Denzel

I always avoided Veradero, which is a world unto its own and quite unlike the rest of Cuba. But if you're into a beach vacation, that's where to go.
IMHO, there's no point in going to Cuba for a beach hang if you're a citizen of the USA. Not worth the potential legal trouble. The beaches are just as nice in the rest of the Caribbean. But if you're interested in hanging out in Havana, by all means GO! There's nothing like it.

There are incredible things to see amid the grinding poverty, away from the tourist spots. One highlight is the museum of the Ministry of the Interior, which houses all the items the CIA tried to kill Castro with (the poisoned cigar, briefcases with hidden rifles, etc.) I was pretty much tossed out of there by a female soldier ten years ago.
I never had hot water and the hotels went from new to nasty, so you have to know a little to get the good stuff. You can also get a little hungry eating where the citizens eat after a while. I used to sneak off to a tourist hotel with a few locals for hamburgers when the going got tough. Havana's getting better by the day and the prices are going up too, thanks to European investment. It'll be a very different place in a few years.

From what I understand (and if I'm wrong please correct me) there's a real generational split amongst the Miami Exiles, with the younger generation (under 35) strongly favoring rapproachment with Havana, and their elders (most of whom can still remember the Batista regime) as opposed as ever. But that's the way of things. Change is incremental. Investment and the growing authority of the younger Castro are making smdest but steady changes throughout the Island. Time and maturation effect change amongst the Florida Cubanos.

I think you're 100% correct. It's going to take a while for those under-35s to take full control, though, and who knows what they might decide when they come to power. Most of those under-35s favoring change also tend to be have-nots, distressed that relatives inside Cuba aren't living well and/or interested in their heritage. The haves are largely toeing the line.
I also wouldn't expect all that much to change when Fidel dies. From what I've seen--including A LOT of ant-regime free speech in the streets--the people are rather supportive of their rebel stand. That could all come crashing down when McDonald's goes up next to the Hemingway House, but I'm not all that sure it will anytime soon.

The benefit of going through Varadero is that the prices are cheap for roundtrip air from a Canadian hub. Last time I went, we flew into Varadero, spent a day or two getting buzzed on the beach, went to Havana for the rest of the week. In Havana, many people rent out 1 or 2 bedroom apartments to tourists. It can be a great experience - living in a faded colonial mansion - although it helps a lot if you speak Spanish, since not everyone speaks English. Here's a link to a site that allows Cubans to post their accomodations Casa Particular. Here's a 2 BR apartment with AC and hot water for $50/night Casa Alex One problem with the hotels, is that the food is not terribly good (think prison food with fresh fruit, even in super-luxe hotels). Better food is found in Paladars - semi-underground restaurants people set up inside their houses and apartments (the better ones are very busy and reservations are necessary).

If you're American or Canadian you only need a passport (or Birth certificate) but no visa (including the Mexicans, Swedes, Israeli and Swiss). And because of all the excitement concerning the country, you are forced to be aware of the medical emergency numbers.
