Apparently the FBI doesn't keep statistics, but it seems to me there is great potential for an accidental discharge.
Wouldn't it be safer to use a rock or hairbrush or even a shoe?

If concerned about colateral damage there is always the Ryan Knox style-use a water pistol.

the pistol wont discharge with out a round in the chamber. even unlikely it would if one were chambered, as long as the hammer aint cocked.

What about a revolver? The hammer could easily, and I mean easily, get tangled in a certain someones hair.
Are you saying only automatics should be used for pistol-whipping? I'm pretty sure the practice pre-dates the m1911.

it takes a bit of leverage to cock the hammer on a revolver, and getting it tangled in someones hair probably wouldnt do the trick...while not impossible Im sure, but highly unlikely...a few raps from the butt of a pistol and the victim wont be doing much...problem solved, temporarily.

The problem with using a revolver to pistol-whip is the potential for frame damage and barrel misalignment.
That's why a qualified pistol-whipper would only use the grip or butt of the pistol--the 'handle' for you laymen or apprentice whippers out there.
Resin-based pistols are ok depending on the ambient and operating temperatures. For instance, I wouldn't use a Glock if I was in Alaska.
Better to stick to something like a .357 and use the butt. Just don't keep a round under the hammer to be on the safe side, or go old skool and use a Navy or Army Colt with the nice, heavy brass frame. A m1911 is also good due to its weight.

The altercation started in a home on North 22nd Street, where Jones first knocked down the victim, Latasha Nicole Heart.
After knocking her to the ground, he began to strike her about the face and head with a Walter PPK 380 handgun.
As he continued to beat her, the gun accidentally went off and Jones shot himself in the hand.
When police arrived, Jones fled the scene, but was quickly tracked down and taken to the hospital for the hand injury.
He is currently in the custody of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department.
The victim was also taken to the hospital and treated for face and head injuries.
She was later released.
Jones faces a variety of charges, including aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated stalking, possession of a stolen firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In all honesty the most satisfying first strike for the pistol whip is by using a bitch slap motion across the face right handed from left to right as opposed to the 12 to 6 curveball type technique we often see in the cinema. The top to bottom strike to the crown of the head is highly overrated and too glamorized by overzealous directors looking for style over substance for todays McDonaldized consumer.
