Gonzo on HD is just a dumb idea and a pointless expense for the studios and fans IMO. Unless customers demand higher quality jerk material, what's the point other than winning a pissing match with the competition?



All of these are good points that I've considered myself. There is an argument that with so few companies releasing titles in TRUE HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (ie: not the home pressed crap that may or may not work on your high def player), the geek factor weighs in heavily. Those who can afford an HD television and all the needed equipment to play the latest mainstream titles in all their glory will probably want at least a few pornos to showcase as well. The keeping up with the Jones' attitude ("I have more resolution than you") is pretty common among geeks and the company bragging rights may move SD titles too.

Right now, Adult DVD Empire has an impressive 8 HD DVD titles for sale and only 2 Blu-Ray flicks (one of them is arguable too). If even a couple of percent of the people owning a Playstation 3 picked up the newest version of Debbie Does Dallas Again on Blu-Ray or a similar portion of people owning one of the X-Box 360 HD-DVD devices bought Curse Eternal; both would be big hits. For comparison purposes, how many thousands of standard definition DVD titles have come out this year already???

One thing to note about the newer formats is that while their resolution is indeed POTENTIALLY substantially higher, every single porn release to date for them is only a marginal improvement; hardly enough to justify doubling the price. Re-releasing a title on the low end of the learning curve for high definition mastering and charging too much is no way to encourage a market to grow. The impact on the format war will be negligible but an early leader in either format could translate into greater all around sales.
