That's why his regime tortured Islamic activist Sayyid Qutb, which in effect twisted Qutb's view on moderate Islam to the point where he created a new doctrine which was then picked up by Ayman Zawarhiri, who was one of the founders of Islamic Jihad, which later assassinated Sadat.

Worked out well for him.
