I heard that he went to iraq to try to capitalise on the opportunities that were touted for the rebuild of the country. He was trying to get into building and maintaining antenna towers for telecommunications. In other words, like most americans and allied forces that are in iraq at the moment, he was trying to help the iraqis, not hinder them.
