That's a good question. It looks like Playboy has always been considered a stepping stone to greater things. The myth seems to be that if you play it right Playboy can propel you into the upper echelons of American society... and that you would be doing the wrong thing and wasting a great opportunity if you just went on to being a vulgar whore... somehow it's prestigious and socially acceptable to appear nude in Playboy - but it's not acceptable if it's any other smut publication. It's the result of successful branding of Playboy.

Apparently not all Playmates move on to greater things, but the satisfaction that comes from being able to say "I was in Playboy, I'm one of the most beautiful women in the world" maybe lasts a lifetime...
