WWE will continue with their live broadcast of their weekly show, RAW, tonight at 8 p.m. on USA. WWE officials said a tribute to Benoit is planned for the show.
RAW will be making a stop in the Cajundome on July 9.
Benoit, a Canadian-born wrestler, had stints in WWE, as well as World Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling. He was 40 years old.
From wrestlingnews.com: I find myself awfully numb typing this. With sadness, we have to report the unfortunate news that Chris Benot (40), wife Nancy (43), and son Daniel (7) were found dead in their Atlanta home. Chris' other two children were in and are still in Canada at the time of their passing.
No further details are available at this time. The only news coming from Georgia Police, is that the 'family was not shot to death'. I know that statement sounds cold. But it does rule out one speculation that is running rampant surrounding their deaths. Once an update is available, we will post it here on the website and hotline.
Tonight WWE will air a three hour tribute to the life of Chris Benoit. Raw, Smackdown, and ECW stars as well as several legends will be onhand.I am hopeful that Vince McMahon will be standing on the runway paying tribute as well and his storyline is dropped. And if it is dropped, there wont be one person at all in and out of wrestling that would have a problem with it.
We have already updated the hotline (718-303-4444) if anyone wants to call. Myself, Joey, and Kevin spent the entire 30 minutes (main greeting and option 1) on this story and celebrating the life of Chris Benoit.

I hate to say it but this smells really bad. No guns were involved and if you were not really close to Benoit and wanted to kill him and his family you had better take a gun with you. Having to bow out of a pay-per-view for "personal reasons" and "a family emergency"? This sounds to me like a Phil Hartman type event.

I've heard two conflicting stories about this . One is the aforementioned Benoit killing his wife and kid Saturday and then killing himself Monday. The other is that Nancy killed the kid Saturday(I've heard suffacation with a garbage bag and I've also heard poisoned with drain cleaner) and called Benoit home. When Benoit found out what she had done he went nuts and strangled her with the cord from an alarm clock. He then hung himself in his weight room. Don't know what to believe but the latter makes more sense. I always thought Benoit had a pretty solid head on his shoulders but that his wife was wound a little tight. Supposed to be some kind of press conference this afternoon to release more details.

When Eddie Guerrero died a few years back a tear came to my eye which was odd since I couldn't recall crying in years. Contrast that with the bile that filled my mouth hearing the Benoit news. If the ENTIRE world of porn had half the problems just WWF/WWE has in recent years it would have been shut down by the feds in a heartbeat...yet Vince McMahon skates by? I always felt Benoit was a creepy, lifeless performer and something was never right about him. Sure his athletic skill and technique was among the best but there's no way you spend that much time in a wrestling ring, especially this day in age, and never develop any significant in-ring mic skills or personality. (contrasting say to Kurt Angle started the same way yet quickly developed incredible mic and talking skills you could just tell were in an inner reflection of his personality). I always felt Benoit had a weird vibe to him and something under the surface. Seriously, a 7 year old kid? Really, beating him to death? Sad to say I was right about him. For fuck's sake Vince McMahon... Shit...I totally forgot Mike Awesome died this year...small world as my uncle was his attorney when he jumped between ECW and WCW. Can we rename this Smiley the "benoit?" ------>

it is the whole culture and vibe of the organization that starts and ends with Vince. Sure, you can admire what he has built from a business standpoint, and the fact that he is a driven individual, but that does not excuse you from having other requisite human qualities or being morally responsible. There have been so many examples and incidents shwoing that the performers who DRIVE his business and upon whom he relies, are fucked up on Steroids and prescription drugs due to the pounding their bodies take. He rewards them with an illusory brand of fame and wealth, which in reality does not come close to adequately compensating them for the risks they take. Furthermore, Vince is a ruthless, egotistical bastard who will cut loose of anyone once it becomes apparent they no longer serve his needs or have become a liability.
Just look at the storylines and message this guy and his organization sends out to the audience (which includes a Large contingent of impressionable young boys AND, as of late thanks to the Divas, girls...) It really is fucked up...

So I can blame the police for that policeman in the news recently, or the nfl for a football players infractions. Purveyors of things that you may not agree with are not to blame for the ills of the world. here's the thing. guys dying young of unnatural causes has become the norm for professional wrestling, and that is cause for major alarm. but there is no alarm, i suppose because "it's just wrestling", and people believe that every single thing about it is not to be taken seriously. if this was the case in any other high profile industry, people would have sat up and taken notice long ago. it's not just one guy that's fucked up, or even two or three. it's gotten to the point (past the point, in fact) that wwe doesn't even acknowledge the deaths of people who used to work for them on tv unless they have to, because it's so fucking many they don't want to show another one and remind people that their business leads to so many tragic endings. that's real.

I agree Vince seems like a dick, didn't much like Benoit either but you blame the entertainment and not the person and I argue. Jeff and others make sleazy porn with no moral value- lots of suicide and deaths amongst other things happen in the industry by your value judgment shouldn't Jeff and others be to blame or responsible for those. People flip their lids- sure some industries attract more than a market share of loopy people but in the end it is still a personal responsibility.

I read this in the paper and still have a weird feeling in my stomach. Like him or not, like wrestling or not, Benoit was one of the greatest technical wrestlers of his generation. My condolensces to his family.

Unfortunately the shit never sticks to the fan for very long because wrestlers are considered to be the porn whores of the sports entertainment industry. It has always been assumed that they are aware of the risks they will take in order to succeed in the business.

(While I type this MSNBC is doing a whole discussion on Scarborough on this which is putting much of this in perspective for me...)
It couldn't be a coincidence, but this murder happens the night of a PPV in which Benoit was to compete for the ECW championship and days after Vince McMahon was "murdered" as part of a crappy story line?
Comparing Vince McMahon to handgun use or Jeff is really a bad use of a comparison. He is the boss of a company which is pretty much the only player in the business. These are his employees who he deals with on a personal basis daily (let alone some careers spanning decades), not random porn whores who Jeff hires for one day out of the year. Vince has said himself he creates these people, his "WWE Super Stars" (not to mention in many cases he even legally owns their names and signature moves). So yeah, when your creations...er...workers are overdosing and dropping dead, yeah, that should be a concern your business has serious addiction and mental health issues with its workers. I felt this way well before Eddie died too.
McMahon has prided his company on "real life" story lines; look how many relationships between wrestlers started on TV then became a part of their real private lives. Or even the inverse: exposing their private lives in order to make a spicier storyline or feud. Don't tell me that doesn't have some remarkable effect on mental health.
Vince McMahon has lived in a fantasy world for years. He barely, BARELY skated by the Federal indictment and steroid allegations in the early 90s. Rather then even now admitting that things were just different in the 80s and everyone did steroids (its really no secret this day in age) he's continued to deny it. Yes, that has had a profound effect for his organization...how do you offer people help for their *real* problems (or even approach them about it) when you deny it even exists and conveniently turn your head when your workers are shooting up even now? We're only now seeing the long-term effects of years of sterioid use...no one knows what type of complications there are 20 years after the fact.
Vince has blackballed so many people in the business for opening their mouths about its problems and how to solve them when he's done nothing (Roddy Piper as mentioned after his Bob Costas interview, Jesse Ventura for suggesting a wrestler's union, etc, etc). He's extended the kay-fabe mentality to his organization where you don't open your mouth about its secrets and has valued the secrecy of its business as much as his profit line. You don't think this mentality had an effect on people not opening their mouths about the warning signs that were surely there? These are issues that a "Don't Try This at Home" commercial aren't going to solve.
Its sad because pro-wrestling will never be the same after this. Its too bad anyone who attempted to change or help the business was stamped out by Vince; he's going to be wishing the stories of dead wrestlers included the headline "OD" rather than "Family Murderer." Any change now will not be voluntary, but will now be forced which is the truly sad part.

Probably not. If this was an election year, Congress would be all over this shit, with committies and subpoenas and endless hours of blah, blah, blah, I plead the fifth, blah, blah, blah. But since it's not, nothing's going to happen beyond the indignation of certain sports writers.

here, again, is the thing. you can say that vince didn't put the steroids in his body, he didn't force anyone to do anything, but if you work in wrestling you know how it works. someone brought up chris masters. masters did lose a lot of mass once the wellness policy went into effect, for obvious reasons. you know what? he also lost his prime spot on television, too. what the fuck message do you think that sends? now he's back up looking like a freak, and, wouldn't you know it, he's back featured and pushed on tv. find a picture of eddie guerrero when he started wrestling, then remember what he looked like when he died. why exactly do you think that is? these guys know what they have to do to succeed, and to a very large degree that is dictated by vince mcmahon. add into that pain medication (and they are all on some kind of pain medication) and whatever recreational drugs most of them take to get by and deal with the grind. sure, no one puts a gun to their head, and they all know what the deal is when they get into it, but that's okay with you? fuck 'em? fuck that. benoit obviously had serious problems. so did lots of these guys. it's happened way too many times now, and shit needs to change.

WWE issued a press release this afternoon following the press conference held by local authorities concerning the Benoit tragedy.
The release counters speculation in the news media that steroids were involved in the murder-suicide.
Here is the complete text of the WWE press release:
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE: WWE - News) is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.
However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:
1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.
2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit's state of mind, and rightly did not do so.
3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.
4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.
5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.
WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

Heres a list of dead wrestlers. It doesn't include Bam Bam Bigolow, Mike Awesome, John Tenta and some of the more recent one in the last two yrs.
# Ravishing Rick Rude — Died at 40 of an apparent heart attack in 1999, a bottle of prescription pills for his bad back at his side. The autopsy report said he died of "mixed medications." Rude was an admitted user of anabolic steroids.
# Louis Mucciolo, a.k.a, Louie Spicolli — Died in 1998 at age 27 when he suffocated on his own vomit after ingesting massive amounts of Soma and alcohol. Investigators also found an empty vial of testosterone, pain pills and an anti-anxiety drug at the scene.
# Brian Pillman — An admitted user of steroids, he died of a heart attack at age 35 in 1997 on the morning of WWF's In Your House: Badd Blood pay-per-view event.
# Rick "the Renegade" Williams — Died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 33 after being released from his World Championship Wrestling contract in 1999.
# "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig — Found dead of a cocaine overdose at age 44 in his motel room on April 10, 2003, the morning of a match. Hennig's father maintained that steroids and painkillers contributed to his death.
# Rodney "Yokozuna" Anoa'i — Died of a heart attack in 2002 at 34.
# Davey Boy Smith, "The British Bulldog" — Died of a heart attack at age 39 on May 17, 2002. An autopsy report indicated that past steroid use had likely played a part in his death.
# Michael "Road Warrior Hawk" Hegstrand — An admitted steroid user, he died of a heart attack at age 46 in 2003.
# Michael Lockwood, "Crash Holly" — In 2003, at the age of 32, he choked to death on his own vomit after ingesting 90 painkiller pills.
# Jerry Tuite, "The Wall" a.k.a. "Malice" — Died at age 36 in 2003 of an apparent heart attack in his hotel room.
# Raymond "Hercules" Hernandez — Dead of heart failure in 2004 at age 47.
# Ray "The Big Boss Man" Traylor — Found dead of a heart attack in 2004 at age 42.
# Eddie Guerrero — After a long battle with painkillers, he was found dead of a heart attack by his nephew in his hotel room at age 38. The first person his nephew reportedly called was Guerrero's best friend, Chris Benoit.
# Chris Candido — Died in 2005 at age 33 from a blood clot after breaking his tibia and fibula and dislocating his ankle in a pay-per-view event.
# Owen Hart — Fell to his death at age 34 in 1999 when the rigging that was lowering him into the ring malfunctioned.
And then there's the story of the Von Erich wrestling family.
Wrestling patriarch Fritz Von Erich, nee Jack Adkisson, had five wrestling sons: Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike and Chris.
David died in a hotel room in Tokyo at the age of 25 in 1984 just as he was embarking on a three-week pro wrestling tour of Japan. The official cause of death was acute enteritis, severe inflammation of the intestines.
Three years later, Mike committed suicide by overdosing on the tranquilizer Placidyl at the age of 23. After David's death, Mike had suffered a series of setbacks including a serious shoulder injury that had left him severely depressed.
Devastated by the deaths of his older brothers and frustrated by his own limitations as a wrestler, the youngest and smallest brother, Chris, shot himself to death at the age of 21 in 1991.
Two years later, Kerry, who had battled a long addiction to painkillers, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 33, leaving eldest brother Kevin as the only survivor of the sport that had defined his family.

the von erichs, if it wasn't wrestling would have been made into a movie long ago. the story of that family is like a fucking greek tragedy. as you mentioned, the saddest thing about that list is that it's so far from complete.

I wouldn't use Yokozuna's death as an indictment of wrestling or McMahan. The guy weighed 600 pounds of course he was going to have a heart attack and probably sooner rather than later. His son had Fragile X syndrome. The steroids may have been for him.

Grace also shouted down one of her guests who wasn't agreeing with her, something that Grace specializes in. The guest wasn't buying Grace's insistence that steroids had to be the blame for the murders, and that didn't fit the agenda that Grace was operating under. I didn't think it possible that anyone could be a bigger buffoon than Nancy Grace, but Geraldo Rivera sunk to a new low tonight with his horrible performance on the O'Reilly Factor. Rivera, who's previous biggest professional embarassment was opening up an empty safe that belonged to Al Capone, strongly implied that Kevin Sullivan might have been involved in both the Benoit and Sherri Martel cases. Rivera stupidly proclaimed that Martel was found dead under suspicious circumstances on the same day as the Benoit murder-suicide. Martel had actually died the week before. Rivera pointed out that the connection between the cases was Kevin Sullivan who was Nancy Benoit's ex-husband and had also known Sherri Martel in his role as a wrestling booker. Rivera all but insinuated Sullivan was responsible for all of the deaths. Sullivan should find a good lawyer and sue Fox News. The absolutely embarassing way the cable news channels have covered this story makes you wonder if they are as totally incompetent when they report on "real" news. Facts seem to mean nothing to these people, and they are sloppy at best in much of the information they are "reporting" on.
